Twelve Russian intelligence officers have just been indicted by the Justice Department for hacking the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign during the 2016 elections.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced on Friday that 12 foreign agents from Russia’s GRU intelligence agency attempted to interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. In order to do this, the agents used spear-phishing attacks through malware. Using the “X-agent” malware, the Russian intelligence officers were able to use and collect passwords from unsuspecting targets via key-logging and screenshots.  Read more…

Facebook says it gave ‘identical support’ to Trump and Clinton campaigns

Facebook’s hundreds of pages of follow-ups to Senators make for decidedly uninteresting reading. Give lawyers a couple months and they will always find a way to respond non-substantively to the most penetrating questions. One section may at least help put a few rumors to rest about Facebook’s role in the 2016 Presidential campaigns, though of course much is left to the imagination.

What we can learn from the 3,500 Russian Facebook ads meant to stir up U.S. politics

On Thursday, Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee released a massive new trove of Russian government-funded Facebook political ads targeted at American voters. James Comey lets rip on Trump in first televised interview since firing

TwitterFacebook

If you thought the disdain between Donald Trump and former FBI director James Comey would fizzle away, Sunday surely allayed any prospect of a truce.

Ahead of the launch of his autobiography A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, Comey appeared on ABC’s 20/20, in his first televised interview since being fired as director of the FBI.

In the five-hour interview with anchor George Stephanopoulos — it has been transcribed online, if you’re truly keen — Comey took aim at the president and responded to criticism of his handling of the Clinton email investigation. Read more…

Reddit and Pornhub hosted fake Hillary Clinton porn linked to Russian accounts

TwitterFacebook

As we found out in March, Facebook, Twitter and Google aren’t the only online platforms where Russian interference with the 2016 U.S. election has proved a problem.

Now, NBC News reports that Russian-linked accounts on Reddit, Pornhub, Spankbang and Imgur pushed a fake pornographic video of Hillary Clinton.

The video, named “Leaked Hillary Clinton’s Hotel Sex Tape with Black Guy,” was reportedly created by Russia’s Internet Research Agency, which has been accused of meddling in the U.S. presidential election.

On Reddit, the video was posted by a now banned and archived account called Rubinjer, which had more than 100,000 upvotes to its name. Upvotes are the equivalent of Facebook’s likes, and in conjunction with downvotes, are used to determine the relevancy of a post or comment. Read more…
