With 14 potential candidates and no clear frontrunner, there’s already a lot to keep track of in the 2020 democratic primaries — but there’s also a lot of opportunity. One potential new entrant to the race could make things even more interesting.

Pete Buttigieg has been the mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012. Despite his low profile compared to the rock star members of congress and outspoken CEOs running for president, Buttigieg has gained fresh attention in recent days. 

During a compelling interview with CNN at its South by Southwest Town Hall, he had a viral moment that boosted his profile when he trounced the self-described religious conservative Vice President Mike Pence for being “the cheerleader of the porn star presidency.” Buttigieg had to work closely with Pence when Pence served as Governor of Indiana from 2013-2017. The Democratic field in 2020 got a little more crowded — and someone is finally putting climate change center stage.

Washington governor Jay Inslee announced on Friday that he will seek the Democratic nomination for president. But what really sets Inslee apart is his  commitment to being the climate change candidate. In fact, Inslee seems to be the first major candidate in U.S. history to make climate change his main platform for running. 

The main mission statement on Inslee’s campaign website is all about climate change, but it also illustrates how it can affect a large range of other issues, including the economy and national security. Read more…

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz tweeted on Sunday that he’s considering a run for the White House as a “centrist independent,” whatever that is. 

I love our country, and I am seriously considering running for president as a centrist independent.

The tweet was part of a coordinated roll-out — an exclamation point to a coinciding profile of Schultz that aired on Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes. In his chat with Scott Pelley, the 65-year-old white billionaire tried to paint himself as a man for all people.  Read more…
