Qualcomm is building 5G into chipsets and PCs

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA—Qualcomm is taking the next step into 5G, promising 5G-enabled Windows laptops and to integrate 5G into next year’s Snapdragon smartphone platform. Both Qualcomm’s 8cx 5G chipset for PCs and its unnamed future integrated phone chipset will rely on its new X55 modem, which supports all of the current globally planned 5G networks.

The new mobile phone platform (let’s call it the Snapdragon 865, although it may be a new product line for 5G) will be ready for commercial devices in early 2020, and Samsung will use the new platform in future products—probably the Galaxy S11.

“We look forward to introducing a device on this platform in the near future,” Dr. June Hee Lee, head of Samsung’s technology strategy team said. Read more…

LG gets a 5G flagship, making the world’s longest phone name even longer

For a company with a two letter name, LG loves nothing so much as an unwieldy title. A form of overcompensation, perhaps? Whatever the case, the lengthening of LG phone names is one of this world’s few constants, and as such, it ought to be no surprise that the company’s first 5G handset happily continues […]

Xiaomi has a 5G phone and its killer feature is the price

TwitterFacebook

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is known for launching full-featured phones with low prices, and the company’s event ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona did not stray far from that concept.

On Sunday, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 5G, a powerful phone with 5G capabilities that costs 599 euros ($680).

The Mi Mix 3 5G is exactly the same as the regular Mi Mix 3, only it comes with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chips and the company’s X50 5G modem. Xiaomi claims the X50 allows for really fast 5G performance; one example says users will be able to download a 15-minute 1,080p video, or twenty-six 320 Kbps mp3 files, in just 1 second.  Read more…

Magic Leap’s ideas for a ‘spatial internet’ could be a glimpse of our 5G future

TwitterFacebook

Tech optimism can be hard to come by these days. But the idea that tech will empower us to make the world a better place abounds at Magic Leap — it just all depends on 5G.

Magic Leap, the company best known for its augmented reality headsets, is unveiling some grand ideas about what it sees as the future of technology. Rony Abovitz, the company’s CEO, first shared his vision for the future, called the “Magicverse,” in Oct. 2018.

Abovitz expanded on that idea in a company blog post and interview Saturday, in which he describes the Magicverse as “an Emergent System of Systems bridging the physical with the digital, in a large scale, persistent manner within a community of people.” Read more…

Sorry, Trump. 6G is not a thing.

TwitterFacebook

Did the President just add a digit to a concept he doesn’t understand to make it sound even better?

Trump, as he does, tweeted some out-of-left-field flim-flam Thursday morning, in advance of his trade talks with China. Now, it’s always wise to gird your loins whenever Trump ventures into technology concepts, but this morning was special.

Not only did Trump push for the deployment of 5G technology, but he also advocated for “6G” — a technology that does not exist.

I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind on………
