Netflix defends its impact on the movie business ahead of Oscars debate

Netflix did pretty well at this year’s Academy Awards, but it’s also facing pushback from some big names in the movie business. “Roma” took home more high-profile Oscars (Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography) than any Netflix or streaming original before it. But it lost out to “Green Book” for Best Picture, a […]

The most savage things critics have said about 2019 Best Picture winner ‘Green Book’

TwitterFacebook

Newly-named Best Picture winner Green Book may have won over the Academy, but it sure didn’t win over all critics.

Even as Green Book‘s Oscars campaign picked up steam, it’s earned some reviews ranging from unfavorable to flat-out brutal, with much of the criticism stemming from accusations that the film was tone-deaf to its subject matter

Here’s a rundown of what some critics had to say — and in some cases, are still saying — about the highly contentious Green Book.

Matt Goldberg, Collider:

Whiteness is violence and films like Green Book act like a band-aid on the deep, infected and festering wound that is whiteness and anti-Blackness. Nothing more.

Anne Hathaway pokes fun at her terrible Oscars gig with perfect Instagram caption

No one remembers Anne Hathaway’s terrible Oscars hosting gig better than Anne Hathaway.

The Academy Award-winning actress hosted with James Franco in 2011, and was widely panned by critics and audiences for it.

However, self-aware queen Hathaway posted the perfect Oscars throwback, poking fun at her own hosting gig ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.

“No matter what happens with today’s show, just remember, it’s already been worse,” she captioned her Instagram post. “Happy Oscars!”

Lady Gaga, Spike Lee, and other Oscar nominees face off on ‘SNL’ Family Feud

TwitterFacebook

This may be a game show parody rather than the actual thing, but it’s got one notable advantage over February’s Academy Awards show: there’s a host.

Kenan Thompson revived his effortless Steve Harvey impression for another episode of Celebrity Family Feud: Oscars Edition. This one pit the Hollywood old guard — Spike Lee (Don Cheadle), Glenn Close (Kate McKinnon), Sam Elliott (Beck Bennett), and Olivia Coleman (Cecily Strong) — against a bunch of noobs, plus Bradley Cooper (Kyle Mooney).

The best thing about this bit? Melissa Villaseñor’s transformative Lady Gaga impression. Read more…

4 categories will be cut from Oscars broadcast

TwitterFacebook

Kicking tradition to the curb, the Academy has controversially decided to eliminate four categories from the live broadcast of the 91st Oscars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the awards for best cinematography, film editing, live-action short, and makeup and hairstyling will be presented during commercial breaks, not during the broadcast as usual.

The plan to present during commercial breaks was reportedly formulated by the Academy’s board of governors in August, but exactly which categories hadn’t been decided on at the time.

So, now we know. Although the cuts are reportedly meant to shorten the show — 24 awards in three hours — they’ve angered many who describe it as disrespectful. Read more…

Netflix’s new feature helps you get ready for the Oscars

TwitterFacebook

The 91st Academy Awards are just a few weeks away, and if you’re struggling to feel adequately hype, fear not. Netflix is sweeping in with the assist.

The streaming service is adding a new sidebar to its layout, honoring Oscar nominees and winners of days gone by. Older projects, like the 1942 Best Documentary Film winner Prelude to War, are streaming alongside a few of 2019’s nominees — Netflix’s own Roma among them, of course.

At present, the curated collection, titled “Celebrate the Oscars,” includes 69 films for viewers to choose from. However, Netflix plans to keep the feature as a permanent asset, allowing streamers to easily access Academy-honored films years round. Naturally, additions and removals will apply here as they do the rest of Netflix’s offerings.  Read more…
