Facebook settles ACLU job advertisement discrimination suit

Facebook and the ACLU issued a joint statement this morning, noting that they have settled a class action job discrimination suit. The ACLU filed the suit in September, along with Outten & Golden LLC and the Communications Workers of America, alleging that Facebook allowed employers to target ads based on categories like race, national origin, […]

Facebook is trying to defang a strong law on facial recognition

TwitterFacebook

We already know Facebook will do pretty much whatever it wants with your data, but a lawsuit shows the lengths it will go to in defending that approach.

On Monday, the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Center for Democracy & Technology, and Illinois Public Interest Research Group, filed what’s known as a “friend of the court brief.”  The brief takes a stance against what appears to be an argument Facebook is advancing in court that would weaken a strong biometric data privacy law.

Three Illinois plaintiffs are suing Facebook in a class-action suit, stating Facebook did not comply with an Illinois law that requires informed and written consent for the collection of biometric data — in Facebook’s case, facial recognition. A federal judge gave the case the go ahead in April. Read more…

Congress members demand answers from Amazon about facial recognition software

When we called the ACLU’s Amazon’s Rekognition press release an “attention-grabbing stunt” when we wrote about it earlier today, well, consider that attention grabbed. Several Democratic members of Congress have responded with a strongly worded letter to founder Jeff Bezos. Reps. Jimmy Gomez and John Lewis issued a letter to Bezos, after the ACLU noted that […]

ACLU says Amazon facial recognition associated Congress members with mugshots

As far as attention-grabbing stunts go, this is a pretty good one. The ACLU has been attempting to raise awareness of Amazon’s Rekognition software for some time, stating that it “raises profound civil liberties and civil rights concerns.” For its part, Amazon has brushed these off, telling TechCrunch back in May, “As a technology, Amazon […]

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are throwing a very expensive party for Trump’s birthday

TwitterFacebook

It’s the president’s 72nd birthday, and Trump’s favorite Twitter adversaries are celebrating in a big way.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have long been vocal about their disagreements with the Trump administration, so when the president’s 72nd birthday rolled around, the family took it as an opportunity to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union — and they’re urging their fans and followers to do the same.

“John and I are outraged to see and hear the horror stories of immigrant families seeking asylum and refuge in America being ripped apart due to the inhumane policies of the Trump administration,” reads a statement Teigen posted on social media. She’s referring to the countless reports of children being held in facilities without their parents as a result of Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ “zero tolerance” immigration policy.  Read more…

Amazon facial recognition software raises privacy concerns with the ACLU

Amazon hasn’t exactly kept Rekognition under wraps. In late 2016, the software giant talked up its facial detection software in a relatively benign AWS post announcing that the tech was already being implemented by The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon for suspect identification. The ACLU of Northern California is shining more light on the […]

Amazon is under fire for selling facial recognition tools to cops

TwitterFacebook

Amazon has some explaining to do.

The online retail giant has been caught providing facial recognition technology to law enforcement in Oregon and Orlando, according to documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act Request.

Emails obtained through the request show how Amazon has been advertising and selling its facial recognition product, Rekognition, for only a few dollars a month to law enforcement agencies — in the hopes that they would encourage other agencies to sign up. The emails also show Amazon has marketed consulting services to law enforcement as well. Read more…
