Nvidia outbids Microsoft, Intel to acquire chipmaker Mellanox for $6.9 billion

Nvidia has come out on top in a bidding war for chipmaker Mellanox.

In a press release on Monday, Nvidia announced its $6.9 billion acquisition of Mellanox, an Israel and California-based networking technology and supercomputer chipmaker. The all-cash acquisition is the largest ever for Nvidia, a company best known for its graphics processors for high-performance gaming.

Mellanox’s focus is on technology for networking and data storage. The company creates InfiniBand and Ethernet products for use in the cloud and data centers as well as in the artificial intelligence sector. It boasts that its technology is used in half of the top 500 most powerful supercomputers. Read more…

Spotify bets big on podcasts with acquisition of Gimlet and Anchor

Music-streaming king Spotify sees a future in podcasts.

The company announced on Wednesday that it has made two huge acquisitions that firmly plant Spotify in the podcasting business. The music-streaming giant has bought Gimlet Media Inc., a popular podcast producer, and Anchor, a platform that helps creators produce and publish their podcasts.

According to Recode, Spotify is paying around $230 million for Gimlet. Recode first reported that Spotify and Gimlet were in talks last week. It’s currently unknown how much Spotify spent on Anchor.

Recode points out that the acquisition puts Spotify in the content creation business for the first time — something the company hasn’t done in its almost 11 years in the music industry.  Read more…

IBM to acquire open source company Red Hat for a whopping $34 billion

$34 billion. 

That’s how much IBM has offered to pay, in cash, to acquire the open source software company Red Hat. 

Red Hat gives away its core product — the Red Hat Linux distribution — for free, but it makes money on support and cloud computing. And the latter is where IBM’s focus is at.

“The acquisition of Red Hat is a game changer. It changes everything about the cloud market. IBM will become the world’s #1 hybrid cloud provider,” said IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty.

Microsoft officially closes $7.5 billion purchase of GitHub

Microsoft has officially acquired the developer platform, GitHub.

In June, Microsoft confirmed reports that the company was seeking a deal to purchase GitHub, a hosting service and platform geared towards computer programmers and developers. GitHub was last valued at $2 billion. Microsoft acquired them for $7.5 billion.

In an announcement posted on the Official Microsoft Blog on Friday, the company announced the completion of the GitHub acquisition and laid out the future of the service. “GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos, operate independently, and remain an open platform,” Microsoft’s post says.  Read more…

Did you know that a near hour-long collection of children’s nursery rhymes set to 3D animation is the 20th most popular YouTube video ever?

The video, with over 2 billion views and counting on the site, was created by the YouTube channel Little Baby Bum

And the husband-and-wife duo behind the popular channel just sold Little Baby Bum, likely for millions of dollars.

The exact sale price is confidential, but a social media marketing firm told Bloomberg that the London couple likely made between £6 million to £8.5 million ($7.8 million to $11.1 million).
