The holidays can be all consuming: From shopping for gifts, to travel plans, to a jam-packed social schedule, it’s easy to get caught up in the madness. Which is why it’s so important to take a step back and remember the people and charities that need support.

In the year 2016 alone, $390 billion was given to charitable organizations, and the majority of this money — 72 percent to be exact — came from individual donors, according to Giving USA

In the spirit of giving, we’ve rounded up local charities across the country that are all worthy of your attention this holiday season. No matter where you live, there are plenty of ways to give back — and this doesn’t just involve donating money. Organizations benefit immensely from people donating their time and energy to help out with day-to-day operations or special events. Read more…

Toys for Tots is partnering with the Green Bay Packers right in time for the holidays

TwitterFacebook

In 1947, a group of Marine Reservists lead by Major Bill Hendricks collected around 5,000 toys and handed them out to underprivileged children in Los Angeles. This charitable act was inspired in part by Hendricks’ wife, Diane, who felt frustration after being unable to find an organization that would accept and donate her homemade doll.

Thus began Toys for Tots, a program now run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve that has given out roughly 512 million toys to hundreds of millions of needy children.

On December 3, the organization is taking up temporary residency in an unlikely spot: The parking lot of Wisconsin’s Lambeau Field. Capitalizing on the love of Wisconsin’s love of football, The Green Bay Packers’ Toys for Tots collection will take place at the historic stadium prior to the Green Bay Packers-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.  Read more…

Service members are showing their thanks to a local not-for-profit all the way from the Middle East

TwitterFacebook

For the spouses of the brave men and women serving overseas, a phone call or video chat is the only way for families to connect and express their support. Two women with husbands serving in the Middle East have thought of a new way to bring their families together by competing in a race with their husbands while they’re away.

American Family Insurance is a new platinum sponsor of the Berbee Derby 5K/10K Thanksgiving Day Run— a race benefiting Technology Education Foundation, which provides grants to nonprofits for technology programs that benefit underserved youth and adults.

Melanie Kleinheinz and Ashley Bergeman run 5K races every year with their husbands and wanted their family to be together. This year, they ignored the thousands of miles between them and found a way to run the Berbee Derby together. Read more…

It’s no secret that taking time out of your busy life to give back to your community is a good idea — it has even been found to help improve your health. But for some people, giving back is not only second nature but also their life’s work.

We spoke with four people who are doing amazing things in their local communities across the country to learn more about what they’re doing and why it is so important to them.

A vision for literacy

As a former elementary school teacher, literacy education has always been important to Kathryn Starke. Now, she works full-time with her company Creative Minds Publications to improve children’s literacy, with a focus in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Her efforts largely involve helping failing schools become fully accredited in reading, but also include hosting writing workshops at local libraries, author visits, and literacy nights at schools to encourage parents to work on reading with their kids at home.  Read more…

A new nonprofit aims to put music back into schools

TwitterFacebook

When a child picks up an instrument — whether it’s a guitar, trombone, flute, or cello — they’re receiving a unique brand of education that cannot be taught from a textbook.

However, there more than 3.8 million pre-K through grade 12 students in the United States who have zero access to music education. Whether this stems from a lack of funding or a lack of interest, students across America are missing out on the type of valuable lessons that can be taught only through music education.

A new nonprofit called The GRAMMY Music Education Coalition aims to dramatically lessen this number by covering the expensive costs of musical instruments, recording equipment, and professional development courses for teachers in Philadelphia, New York City, and Nashville.    Read more…

An aspiring Eagle Scout wants to help kids in the foster care system

TwitterFacebook

In order to become an Eagle Scout you have to complete an extensive project that shows leadership skills—usually things like building bookshelves or organizing a blood drive. Malachi Saint, a 15 year old from Jefferson City, Missouri, set his sights even higher for his project.

Saint wanted to help children in the foster care system in his local community by raising money to support the Central Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Association. He set an ambitious goal to raise $10,000, and was met with some initial doubt from the Eagle Board of Review, who needed to give final approval on the project.   Read more…
