California, which has some of the strongest data breach notification laws in the U.S., thinks it can do even better. The golden state’s attorney general Xavier Becerra announced a new bill Thursday that aims to close loopholes in its existing data breach notification laws by expanding the requirements for companies to notify users or customers […]

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman accidentally funded fake news
A Silicon Valley billionaire who co-founded LinkedIn is apologizing for accidentally funding a recently uncovered fake news operation.
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman issued a statement on Wednesday addressing a New York Times story that uncovered a “secret experiment” that utilized fake news in the Alabama Senate race that pit Democrat Doug Jones against Republican Roy Moore in December 2017.
The Times report claims that Democratic tech operatives engaged in Russian manipulation tactics, funded by Hoffman, in an effort to help Jones defeat Moore in last year’s special election.

Amazon has confirmed that it will open two massive new offices in New York City and Crystal City, Va., to complement its already massive headquarters in Seattle. Why people on Twitter are giving black women the credit for Roy Moore’s defeat
Democrat Doug Jones pulled a surprise win for the Alabama Senate seat against Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Roy Moore, who’s been accused of sexual misconduct and said America was last “great” when slavery was legal.

Roy Moore is bad at riding horses, and on Tuesday night, he was bad at winning elections.
Moore lost the Senate race in Alabama to Democrat Doug Jones and a lot of people were happy about it. Moore’s win came as a surprise, as Democrats haven’t fared well in Alabama elections for about a quarter decade.
But back to the horse thing. Here is the Republican candidate — who was endorsed by Donald Trump, even though he’s been accused of sexual misconduct by nine women and said America was last “great” when slavery was legal — trying to play cowboy earlier in the day. Read more…

Hooooly crap, Doug Jones did it.
On Tuesday night, he became the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Alabama since 1992, back when Kris Kross was still a thing.
Looks like saying homophobic and racist things — along with being accused of sexually assaulting teenagers — didn’t work out too well for Republican Roy Moore. The GOP’s advantage in the Senate has now been trimmed to 51-49, which is why the party is rushing to put the finishing touches on its tax plan.
Jones supporters, after freaking out about that damn New York Times needle, couldn’t contain their joy after several news outlets called the race for the Democrat. That included Hillary Clinton and Republican Sen. Jeff Flake. Read more…

Following an eleventh hour order instructing voting officials in Alabama to keep the digital ballots generated in Tuesday’s controversial Senate election, the state’s Supreme Court has issued a stay to block that decision. The order to preserve the records was issued by the Montgomery County Circuit Court on Monday afternoon — less than 24 hours before voting was set to… Read More

Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore once said he thinks “homosexual conduct should be illegal.” He’s also said plenty of other racist and intolerant things — along with being accused of sexually assaulting teenage girls.
Well, one man wasn’t going to take it. Nathan Mathis, an Alabama farmer who lost his gay daughter to suicide, stood outside of Roy Moore’s rally on Monday night, and spoke out against the candidate’s homophobic comments.
Here’s the video, from Vaughn Hillyard of NBC News:

Alabama heads to the polls Tuesday, and the Senate race between Democrat Doug Jones and beleaguered Republican candidate Roy Moore is exceptionally tight with just hours to go.
No Democrat has won an election for Senate (or even governor) in Alabama in nearly two decades, but the litany of allegations of sexual misconduct against Roy Moore have helped push Jones to a ten point lead, if Fox News’ latest poll is to be believed. Other pundits believe the race is too close to call.
There’s a lot at stake and the country is watching — and numerous public figures came out in a last ditch attempt to thwart Moore on Monday night. Read more…
