Starved for attention, banned Twitter troll handcuffs herself to the company’s NY office doors

TwitterFacebook

Twitter is facing the unforeseen consequence of banning a right-wing troll from its platform.

Laura Loomer, a known conspiracy theorist,  handcuffed herself to the front door of Twitter’s New York headquarters on Thursday. The stunt was in protest of her ban from the platform last week.

Once handcuffed to the company’s doors, Loomer used a supporter’s Periscope account to broadcast her protest online. She then shouted unsubstantiated claims about the suppression of conservative viewpoints on Twitter using a megaphone.

Congressman shuts down alt-right protester by … auctioneering?

TwitterFacebook

A Congressman drowned an alt-right protestor’s interruption with his impressive auctioneering skills.

Conspiracy theorist and self-proclaimed “investigative journalist” Laura Loomer interrupted Jack Dorsey’s Congressional testimony to rail on the Twitter CEO for political bias.

Selfie stick in hand — because if you’re not livestreaming, are you really protesting? — Loomer begged Trump for help because according to her, “Jack Dorsey is trying to influence the election.”

But Rep. Billy Long wasn’t having it. The Missouri Republican, who was a professional auctioneer before pursuing a political career, shut down her tirade with expert rapid-fire auctioneering. Read more…

Milo Yiannopoulos’ Facebook rant shows that de-platforming actually works

TwitterFacebook

Wait, Milo Yiannopoulos is still on Facebook?

Late Friday night, former Breitbart golden boy and rallying figure for the alt-right, Milo Yiannopoulos, complained in the comments section of a Facebook post about how hard his life had become.

“I have lost everything standing up for the truth in America, spent all my savings, destroyed all my friendships, and ruined my whole life,” Yiannopoulos wrote. “At some point, you realize it’s occasionally better to spend the money on crabs and cocktails.”

Yiannopoulos later characterized the comment as “casually snapping” at someone, but his words highlight a greater point: that de-platforming hate-mongering internet celebrities actually works. It reduces the influence pernicious trolls like Yiannopoulos can have on national discourse. And makes their speech, though still hateful, and free, do less harm.  Read more…

Bumble bans Pizzagate-pusher Jack Posobiec, and his reaction is really something

TwitterFacebook

The dating app and social network Bumble has banned a profile connected to conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec.

The account came to the attention of Bumble when Twitter user Lindsey Ledford‏ shared an image of a profile on the app for a 33-year-old man named Jack, which looks an awful lot like Posobiec.

The ‘Twitter Purge’ Nazi reckoning has begun. Here are the rules.

TwitterFacebook

Twitter has a list. They’re checking it twice.

Well, no, actually, it’s much more complex than that. For the past two years, Twitter has been working with its Trust & Safety Council — a body of experts in online safety — to balance running a platform for free speech with curbing violence and harassment.

On Monday, Twitter put into effect new rules that are, in part, a result of many of those conversations. The rules are a major shift in the company’s policies, which for years erred on the side of letting users post all sorts of vile content. Now, Twitter will take into account user behavior “on and off the platform” as it relates to affiliation with violent organizations.  Read more…
