Mixed reviews reveal critics can’t quite agree on ‘Aquaman’

“Like its hero, it’s the kind of film that surveys the strangeness in front of it, flashes a smile, and dives right in. And if it stays in the water a bit too long—well, I’d still come back for a sequel.”

Critics like Mashable’s Angie Han concede that Aquaman isn’t without its barnacles, but contend the flick is at least worth the price of admission. Others are denouncing the DC Comics’ tentpole as an irrefutable, outright flop. 

The Jason Momoa and Amber Heard-starring adventure tackles the origin story of the Justice League’s trident-wielding hero, taking viewers into the seven kingdoms of Atlantis and entrenching them in ocean-dwelling politics. Read more…

Early ‘Aquaman’ reactions are surprisingly supportive

Critics’ first reactions to Aquaman are finally swimming onto social media with a surprising upswell of positivity.

The highly anticipated DC chapter isn’t due in theaters until next month—Dec. 21 to be exact—but those who caught early screenings are promising a good time for future audiences. 

A standalone spin-off of The Justice League, the Jason Momoa-starring saga follows the titular Aquaman as he attempts to quell tension between the residents of the Seven Seas and us land lubbers. He is joined in his quest by Mera, played by Amber Heard.

Once upon a time, Aquaman actor and activist Amber Heard had no social media presence. That fairytale ended last year, when she realized the world was talking about her personal and professional lives and she was missing from the conversation. 

“For years and years … I would think constantly, ‘Thank goodness I don’t have to deal with that,'” says Heard. “Only, only because I realized that I was the only one not weighing in on my narrative — when I realized that and seeing how bastardized it had become in the hands of others with prejudice and vested interest in the wrong things … I finally had to step in.”  Read more…
