Huawei has built an Android alternative in case US tensions increase

Tensions between the U.S. and Huawei show no sign of easing. Last week, the electronics giant announced that it has filed a lawsuit against the government over an “unconstitutional” ban on its products. Meanwhile, earlier this week, the U.S. threatened German intelligence over the country’s use of Huawei 5G products. The company has understandably been […]

Google releases first beta version of Android Q

TwitterFacebook

The next version of Android is here… sorta.

Like clockwork, Google’s released the first beta version of its mobile operating system, Android Q, for developers. The new version of Android is available to download for all Google Pixel owners — that’s for Pixel 1, 2, and 3 — and includes a number of updates ranging from improved security to with the most notable being support for foldable devices.

One of the biggest issues facing foldable devices is how Android will adapt to the various modes when folded and unfolded. Different devices will have have different display configurations and it’s important Android can morph appropriately. Read more…

New Android adware found in 200 apps on Google Play

Security researchers have found a new kind of mobile adware hidden in hundreds of Android apps, and downloaded more than 150 million times from Google Play. The malware masquerading as an ad-serving platform, dubbed SimBad by researchers at security firm Check Point, infected more than 200 apps which, likely unbeknownst to the app developer, would […]

Samsung Galaxy S10e

The Good

Super fast performance • Reliable physical fingerprint reader • Fun ultra-wide secondary camera

The Bad

Bixby button only partially customizable • Wireless PowerShare feature was slow

The Bottom Line

Samsung’s Galaxy S10e costs less and has virtually every feature the S10 and S10+ have, including one they don’t: a physical fingerprint reader that works really well.

As much as much as I like Samsung’s bigger and pricier S10+ — it’s only a couple of complaints shy of perfect — the smaller and cheaper Galaxy S10e, which starts at $750, is a better phone. Read more…

Crappy in-display fingerprint readers are ruining new phones

TwitterFacebook

In-display fingerprint readers — biometric sensors embedded within the screens of many new phones — are garbage. They must be purged from all future devices unless they get significantly better soon.

There, I said it, and boy does it feel great to get that off my chest. Because it’s true.

As a tech reviewer, I’m in the enviable position of being able to test out new devices before they trickle down to everyone.

Sometimes it’s great and sometimes it’s not. It sucked to live without a headphone jack on the iPhone 7, but was life-changing to use AirPods before anyone else could. It was really fun to use phones like the Vivo Nex S and Oppo Find X, with its motorized cameras, and even the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, with its fidgety sliding design. Read more…

How to enable ‘dark mode’ in 10 popular mobile apps

TwitterFacebook

In the past year or so, several apps (and even entire operating systems, like macOS Mojave) have gotten a feature typically called “dark mode,” which is essentially a new color scheme with light text on a dark background.

I’m a big fan of the dark mode. Not only does it save battery — it requires more energy to light up a laptop or a phone screen with a slab of bright white than a dark grey or black — but it also makes everything look cool.

We’re still waiting for some major platforms to get a dark mode — Android is nearly there, for example — but you can already get it on a number of popular mobile apps, including YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Twitter and more.  Read more…

The Galaxy S10+ is everything I expect from Samsung after a decade of refining its Android phones

The phone’s large, notch-free display is a visual treat on the eyes. Samsung’s One UI customization of Android 9 Pie is clean, fast, and responsive — exactly the way software should be. The Galaxy S10+ powers through up to two days on a single charge. The cheapest model has twice as much storage as the least expensive versions of Apple’s latest iPhones. There’s a new third camera on the backside and a second one on the front. Read more…

Google today is introducing a new way for Android developers to generate revenue from their mobile applications. And no, it’s not subscription-related. Instead, the company is launching a new monetization option for apps called “Rewarded Products.” This will allow non-paying app users to contribute to an app’s revenue stream by sacrificing their time, but not […]
