Hope’s ponytail in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ is everything
In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) does something decidedly unusual for a female superhero: She wears her hair up while fighting.
And not in a fancy sci-fi updo or anything, either. Just a plain old messy ponytail, the likes of which you’ve seen on every long-haired woman at the gym.
It may not sound like a big deal. But that one detail speaks volumes about who Hope is – and, maybe even more importantly, how the film sees her.
Hope is not the first heroine to discover the sweet relief of getting her hair out of her eyes. Some, like Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nebula, Black Panther‘s Nakia and Okoye, or Deadpool‘s Negasonic Teenage Warhead, go super short or totally bald. Among the long-haired set, Shuri, also from Black Panther, favors elaborate hairstyles that pull her braids back or up. Read more…

The Marvel heroes, Avengers and otherwise, are an unstoppable charismatic force because there is everything to love about a bunch of hot people with superpowers kicking the snot out of CGI aliens and quipping cleverly in punchy asides. It’s part of the appeal of Marvel heroes that we want to hang out with them.
But to be honest… that might actually kind of suck.
Dr. Strange is a dick. Black Panther and Iron Man are busy being rich. Captain America is a thick slice of trauma cake served with a side of “all my friends are dead” and War Machine tells the same stories over and over at parties. Read more…

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ is the chaser we needed after ‘Infinity War’
Ant-Man and the Wasp isn’t the funniest Marvel movie ever made, or the deepest or the coolest or the most creative. But it just might be the nicest, and that counts for something.

Marvel fans: Get excited.
People got to check out Ant-Man and the Wasp for the first time on Friday night, and while reviews will have to wait until next week, the inevitable tweeting has begun. And if the initial reaction from critics is any indication, Marvel fans are in a delightful sequel to the 2015 film.
Of note: Much of the initial reactions suggest viewers should stick around until the very end. Per critic Ben Davis, the film “has two post-credit scenes you can’t afford to miss.”
