Apple debuts a dashboard for artists that tracks both streams and purchases

Apple today launched a new dashboard that will allow artists on Apple Music to track fans’ listening and buying habits and view a variety of analytics about their music, according to Billboard, which had the launch exclusive from Apple. The dashboard, called Apple Music for Artists, is currently available only for select beta users ahead of a broader launch planned for later this spring. Read More

Jimmy Iovine says he’s not leaving Apple

Last week, Billboard reported Jimmy Iovine, the person who sold Beats to Apple in 2014, was set to leave Apple in August. Well, Iovine says that’s not true, Variety reports. In a conversation with Variety, Iovine noted that there’s more Apple Music and Beats would like to do, saying he’s “committed to doing whatever Eddy [Cue], Tim [Cook] and Apple” need him to do… Read More

Apple Music mogul Jimmy Iovine is reportedly leaving the company

TwitterFacebook

Music industry mogul Jimmy Iovine — who recently voiced concerns about the future viability of music streaming — will leave Apple Music this year, according to a Billboard report.

Iovine helped Apple launch its streaming service back in 2015. Since then, Apple Music has grown dramatically, acquiring 30 million paid subscribers, second in the world behind streaming powerhouse Spotify, who yesterday announced hitting 70 million subscribers.

The music site Hits Daily Double first reported that Iovine’s departure will happen later this year, and Billboard followed by reporting Iovine will leave when his stocks become vested (agreed upon time for Iovine to get rights to his Apple stocks).  Read more…

To fix SoundCloud, it must become the anti-Spotify

Startups die by suicide, not competition. It wasn’t that anyone was stealing SoundCloud’s underground rappers, bedroom remixers, and garage bands. SoundCloud stumbled because it neglected these hardcore loyalists as it wrongly strived to usurp Spotify as the streaming home of music’s superstars.
But four months ago after laying off 40% of its staff, SoundCloud scored a… Read More

Here’s the one way to legally stream Taylor Swift’s ‘reputation’ (sort of)

TwitterFacebook

Taylor Swift has a grudge against streaming services. But there’s still one way to listen to reputation online legally without buying a copy.

iHeartRadio is streaming Swift’s new album—but only as part of a curated reputation radio station. AKA you can’t listen to the full album on demand, but you can listen to a radio station that plays Swift’s back catalogue with songs from the new album sprinkled in. It’s basically like any Taylor Swift Pandora station, but there’s a chance a song from reputation will appear.

9 apps that look fantastic on the iPhone X

TwitterFacebook

Got a brand new iPhone X, or perhaps fantasizing about becoming rich and buying one?

First thing you’ll want to do is load it up with some apps that play nice with the device’s notch.

Apps that haven’t been optimized for the iPhone X will often look like crap — Gmail, for example, ignores the screen’s height and just places huge black bars on top and bottom.

Apple’s App Store now has a “Looks great on the iPhone X” section, but the list isn’t perfect (interestingly, Netflix is listed but I just couldn’t get its videos to zoom in so they cover the entire screen).  Read more…
