Secret issues plagued Uber’s self-driving car program before fatal crash, report says

Uber’s self-driving car program faced a major setback when one of its cars hit and killed a pedestrian Sunday night — but the program was struggling before the deadly accident.

It appears Uber rushed to launch new programs, modified its safety operations, and didn’t hit goals, according to 100 pages of internal company documents the New York Times obtained and sources familiar with Uber’s self-driving efforts in Phoenix who spoke to the publisher. 

An Uber spokesperson didn’t directly deny the Times report in a statement to Mashable, but they did tout the company’s commitment to safety and noted the emotional toll of the crash.  Read more…

Paying your taxes is a complicated pain, but wait if — and bear with me here — what if you could pay them on the blockchain?

That is essentially the totally real idea being debated in Arizona, as the state’s House of Representatives prepares to debate Senate Bill 1091. The bill, passed by the state Senate on Feb. 8, would allow people to pay their state taxes in cryptocurrency

Clearly, this is a great idea and nothing could possibly go wrong. 

If it becomes law, the bill would let cryptocurrency-rich citizens of The Grand Canyon State make tax payments via “a payment gateway, such as Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency, using electronic peer-to-peer systems.” Read more…
