AT&T’s Netgear Nighthawk 5G hotspot, the first consumer mobile 5G device, has been on the market for about a week now, but it’s hard to find any evidence that anyone’s using itOne post on Reddit shows a Speedtest result of 194.88Mbps down — impressive, until you see that the Redditor got 187.44Mbps on AT&T’s 4G network in the same location.
Otherwise, AT&T’s, Netgear’s, and Reddit’s forums are deathly quiet when it comes to any actual 5G users, and Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence database doesn’t seem to show any dramatic speed upticks in AT&T’s 12 announced 5G cities. The carrier doesn’t seem to have shown the 5G device to any journalists, and there are zero hands-ons being shown on YouTube. The company declined to make a unit available to me when I asked, saying they needed to save the relatively small inventory for customers. Read more…

Signs of America’s transition to a low-carbon economy are everywhere. In urban areas, electric buses are joining city fleets. In the suburbs, charging stations for electric vehicles sit prominently next to gas pumps. And in rural parts of the country, wind turbines gently dot the expansive countryside.
A new era of sustainability is on the way. This emerging era is about more than simply moving away from fossil fuels — it’s a sweeping change that touches upon every industry, the way that people manufacture and consume goods, and how working-class citizens make a living.
Companies like AT&T are helping support American’s transition to a low-carbon economy, not only through large-scale purchase agreements for renewable energy, but also by supporting students and preparing the next generation for jobs in the green economy Read more…

On Thursday, HBO and Cinemax went dark for some Dish customers across the country as a feud between the carrier and the pay channel’s parent company escalated. And now that feud could have a huge impact on cord-cutting customers who depend on over-the-top (OTT) services like Sling.
For the first time in the channel’s history, HBO is now blacked out for certain viewers, affecting around 2.5 million of Dish’s 13 million customers — including subscribers to the Dish-owned Sling streaming service. And both sides are blaming the other.
In a statement to USA Today, Dish claims that HBO’s parent-company, AT&T, yanked the channel because it wants “a guaranteed number of subscribers, regardless of how many consumers actually want to subscribe to HBO.” Read more…

An electric vehicle cruising down the highway, a solar panel installed on a neighbor’s rooftop, a wind turbine turning in the breeze: These are just a few of the powerful symbols that represent the blossoming renewable energy economy
There’s little doubt that the world is on the cusp of a new era of energy generation and consumption. From the rise of renewable fuel sources to the increasing number of companies like AT&T that are investing in clean energy, renewables are swiftly becoming a booming industry
As a result, we’re in the midst of an explosion of opportunity — both economic and environmental. In America, the seismic shift toward renewables is evident in both classrooms and boardrooms, particularly as major international corporations invest heavily in clean energy. Earlier in 2018, for instance, AT&T announced the expansion of its renewable energy program in collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources. Read more…

No one spends $85.4 billion to do you a favor.
In its looming acquisition of Time Warner, AT&T sure as shit isn’t about to make you rethink this fundamental truth.
The telecommunications company is on the verge of a massive takeover, approved Tuesday by a federal judge, that has the potential to alter the media landscape in a profound way. And in spite of the perfunctory corporate protestations to the contrary, it doesn’t take a market specialist to know who the beneficiaries of such a deal will be.
The odds are that it’s not going to be you — or, for that matter, the desiccated scatterings of net neutrality’s ghost. In fact, the experts we spoke with suggested that this move threatens competition, consumers, and the future of the internet in general. Read more…

If you like the idea of cable but don’t care about sports, AT&T’s upcoming streaming service might be for you.
The company will soon launch a new $15/month subscription meant to appeal to cord-cutters who don’t need sports channels. The service will also be free for AT&T’s wireless customers who have an unlimited data plan.
Called “AT&T Watch,” the new service was revealed by CEO Randall Stephenson Thursday during testimony in AT&T’s antitrust trial.
According to CNN, Watch will include a selection of cable channels and is meant to “encourage mobile TV viewing.” It’s not known how many channels are part of the package, but AT&T’s decision to omit sports is what allows it to price the bundle at just $15 a month — far lower than even the most basic cable packages. AT&T and Verizon don’t want to let you out of their grasps.
So much so, in fact, that they may have colluded to make it harder for you to switch cellphone carriers.
So reports The New York Times, which notes that the Justice Department is investigating the two companies for possibly working together to stifle a technology known as eSIM. If deployed, eSIM would make it easier for people to jump from provider to provider — no new physical SIM card required — potentially leaving AT&T or Verizon behind in the process.
