While creating self-driving car systems, it’s natural that different companies might independently arrive at similar methods or results — but the similarities in a recent “first of its kind” Nvidia proposal to work done by Mobileye two years ago were just too much for the latter company’s CEO to take politely.

Gates-backed Lumotive upends lidar conventions using metamaterials
Pretty much every self-driving car on the road, not to mention many a robot and drone, uses lidar to sense its surroundings. But useful as lidar is, it also involves physical compromises that limit its capabilities. Lumotive is a new company with funding from Bill Gates and Intellectual Ventures that uses metamaterials to exceed those limits, perhaps setting a new standard for the industry.

Tesla is suing five former employees for stealing trade secrets in what looks like ridiculously obvious fashion.
On Wednesday evening, Tesla filed two lawsuits against former employees and the self-driving startup Zoox, as spotted by The Verge. In the first case, it accuses four ex-employees of porting over “proprietary information and trade secrets” to Zoox. And in the second, it accuses one employee of stealing Tesla’s Autopilot source code, and bringing it over to Xiaopeng Motors (XPeng).
The theft, according to Tesla, was “blatant and intentional.” From the filings, it certainly seems that way. Read more…

It looks like Waymo is about to expand its self-driving taxi service
Waymo One — the self-driving taxi service from Google’s autonomous car company — officially launched in December, but it hasn’t been available to many people. That could change.
In a blog post Tuesday, the company announced a new 85,000-square-foot technical service center in Mesa, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix. The taxi service — available through an app that orders Waymo-ified Chrysler Pacifica minivans — has only been available for about 400 “early riders” in the Phoenix area, but Waymo says it will open up to more people. It’s just not clear when that will happen.
