Apple won’t deny repairs to iPhones with third party replacement batteries anymore

TwitterFacebook

Apple is no longer serving pettiness at the Genius Bar.

Apple will allow Apple stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) to repair iPhones that have non-Apple replacement batteries, according to documents obtained by MacRumors.

Previously, Apple policy has been to deny repairs if an iPhone has an off-brand replacement battery — even if the repair issue had nothing to do with the battery. In June 2018, it got in trouble for this policy in Australia, where Australian officials fined the company 9 million Australian dollars ($6.7 million) for not offering repairs to customers being affected by a glitch caused by a third party repair issue. Tesla plans to buy energy storage company for $218 million

TwitterFacebook

Tesla is adding an energy storage company to its electric vehicle and energy business.

In a $218 million deal with San Diego-based Maxwell Technologies announced Monday, Tesla plans to buy the energy storage makers who build products for the grid, cars, trucks, transportation systems (like railroads), and more.

“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” a Tesla spokesperson said in a statement.

The purchase — expected to close later this year — will give Tesla more access to building cells, battery systems, and modules for its battery-powered vehicles, and energy supplies. Currently, Tesla’s Reno, Nevada Gigafactory is the main site for its own battery production with PanasonicRead more…

Teslas, other EVs struggle in the polar vortex

TwitterFacebook

Electric vehicle owners are discovering the harsh reality of driving a battery-powered vehicle in below-freezing temperatures like those sweeping across the Midwest.

Most drivers know in theory that cold weather adversely affects the car’s and its battery’s abilities, but it’s another thing to see your range plummet on the dashboard next to the frigid outside and interior temperature. In these type of conditions the vehicles have a hard time warming up. Even charging is slowed down. So on Wednesday, EV drivers were dealing with way less range than they were used to — and some Tesla owners couldn’t even get into their frozen cars. Read more…

Why Apple’s upcoming iPhone battery update is a bad idea

TwitterFacebook

In case it wasn’t already really clear, Apple is really, really sorry about slowing down old iPhones with creaky batteries, and it’s taking steps — ALL the steps — to make things right.

Upset iPhone owners can already get a new battery replacement at a reduced $29 cost, and Apple has pledged to release a software update that’ll show people the health of their batteries and let them turn any performance optimization on or off.

Said software update will be a great way to pacify the angry mob, but it’s also a bad idea.

In an interview with ABC News, Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized again for the company’s poor communication on iOS’s built-in power management feature that throttled iPhone performance in order to prevent the phones from unexpectedly shutting down or restarting as the result of an old battery.  Read more…

Don’t buy a smart suitcase that doesn’t have a removable battery

TwitterFacebook

That “smart” suitcase might not be the best gift idea thanks to new checked baggage restrictions from several major airlines.

On Friday, American Airlines announced that starting Jan. 15, only smart suitcases with removable batteries will be allowed on planes. The same goes for Delta and Alaska Airlines

Anyone checking a smart bag will have to remove the battery. And if your smart suitcase doesn’t have a removable battery? Too bad — you’ll have to leave it behind and spend a small fortune at an overpriced airport shop for new luggage, or ship it

Smart suitcases have become more popular recently thanks to features like bag tracking, phone-charging ports, remote-controlled locks, and even weight scales to know if your bag is within airline limits. All the “smart” features are powered by a lithium ion battery. Read more…
