The world’s largest bee has been rediscovered, and it’s HUGE

TwitterFacebook

In January 2019, a clan of scientists and conservationists tramped through the torrid Indonesian forest in search of the Wallace’s giant bee — a species that hadn’t been spotted alive since 1981.

“Nobody had seen it since then,” said Robin Moore, a biologist and communications director for the organization Global Wildlife Conservation, which funded the expedition. “It was feared extinct.”

It wasn’t. They found a female.

The female bee — the larger sex of the species Megachile pluto — is four times the size of the typical European honeybee with a wingspan of 2.5 inches. It’s the largest known bee on the planet. “This is the holy grail of bees,” said Moore.  Read more…

Let’s save the bees with machine learning

Machine learning and all its related forms of “AI” are being used to work on just about every problem under the sun, but even so, stemming the alarming decline of the bee population still seems out of left field. In fact it’s a great application for the technology and may help both bees and beekeepers keep hives healthy.

Bumblebees bearing high-tech backpacks act as a living data collection platform

There’s lots of research going into tiny drones, but one of the many hard parts is keeping them in the air for any real amount of time. Why not hitch a ride on something that already flies all day? That’s the idea behind this project that equips bumble bees with sensor-filled backpacks that charge wirelessly and collect data on the fields they visit.

Bees invade soccer match, causing players to hit the ground

TwitterFacebook

Pitch invasions are usually unwelcome in sport, and especially if the invaders can sting you.

That’s what happened to players of Liga de Portoviejo and Manta FC of Ecuador’s second division on Saturday, when bees descended 26 minutes into the game at Reales Tamarindos Stadium.

Players and officials hit the ground in near unison, leaving them on the deck for half a minute as they waited for the flying insects to pass.

Car swarming with bees doesn’t seem to disturb the man sitting inside of it

TwitterFacebook

Some people have messy cars. Some people have bees. But rarely do the two overlap.

Brandon Singleton captured an alarming display of a car absolutely crawling with bees on Tuesday and kindly shared it on Facebook.

The driver of the car — Wally Leatherwood — is completely unbothered by the sheer amount of bees. And it’s a lot of bees. They’re all across the back seat, crawling up the windows, squirming in the passenger side.

But don’t fear. Wally is familiar with bees. According to ABC News 13, Leatherwood is a local beekeeper and had picked up three boxes of bees to start a new hive. When he stopped to get something to eat, the bees broke out. Read more…

A giant sculpture translates vibrations of 40,000 live bees into an explosion of light and sound

In the heart of London’s Kew Gardens, sitting on a pedestal within the trees, is Wolfgang Buttress’s unique sculpture, ‘The Hive.’
Connected wirelessly to an actual beehive nearby, the sculptures prerecorded sounds and hundreds of lights respon…

Bees invade a motorbike and it’s truly unbeelievable. (Sorry.)

TwitterFacebook

These bees just found a sweet ride and it’s driving straight into our nightmares.

Castlereagh Street in Sydney, Australia was swarmed with bees after the queen bee decided to create her own beehive on a red motorbike. A cloud of bees invaded the streets and looked like a scene out of the 1978 horror flick The Swarm

Soooo when’s the next ticket out of Sydney?
