Tinder just made it harder to know why you’re seeing awful profiles

TwitterFacebook

The more getting rejected changes, the more getting rejected stays the same.

Tinder announced in a March 15 blog post that it had stopped showing users potential matches based on the frequency with which people swiped left or right on their respective accounts. Now, using lots of words to explain very little, the company says it just does something even more nebulous and undefined — but you’d better believe that people running for the hills from your terrible profile still affects which potential matches you’re shown.

Snapchat reportedly announcing new gaming platform in April

TwitterFacebook

If a new report is correct, you could soon have the option of playing a smattering of mobile games on Snapchat in between all of those goofy snaps you take of your dog barking at its own shadow.

The news comes from Cheddar, which reports that Snapchat will announce the platform, codenamed “Project Cognac,” at its partner summit on April 4 in Los Angeles. Cheddar also reports having seen an invitation for the event (I assume mine was lost in the mail) that features the slogan, “Less talk. More play.”

Snapchat hasn’t publicly commented on the report; Mashable has reached out for further details as well.  Read more…

Reddit waits until it’s too late to ban violence-glorifying subreddits

TwitterFacebook

Another day, another internet giant belatedly deciding to apply its own policies in the face of a tragedy.

Following the tragic Christchurch terrorist attack in New Zealand that left 49 people dead and scores more injured, and the subsequent sharing online of a livestream from the killer, Reddit has banned two subreddits that it now says glorified or celebrated violence.

The first, r/watchpeopledie, was pretty much exactly what it sounds like — a place where people shared and commented on grisly videos of real deaths. The second, r/gore, was less specific in its death requirements but also contained violent video and images.  Read more…

Apple has a very blunt response to Spotify’s complaint

TwitterFacebook

Well, it’s on now.

Yesterday, Spotify publicly filed a complaint against Apple to the European Commission over “unfair” App Store rules, which allegedly make it hard for Spotify to compete with Apple Music on equal ground.

Today, Apple responded by saying that Spotify wants “all the benefits of a free app without being free,” and throwing a couple more jabs for good measure.

In a lengthy post on the company’s website, Apple said that Spotify has used the App Store “for years to dramatically grow their business,” but now it wants to keep the benefits of that ecosystem “without making any contributions to that marketplace.” Read more…

If you think Facebook has no competition, just ask Telegram

TwitterFacebook

Facebook is often seen as an untouchable behemoth in the social media realm, a site so big that no competitor can come close. But if you trust Pavel Durov, the founder of messaging app Telegram, even a simple stumble from Facebook like a few hours of outage can have pretty serious consequences for its user base.

On Thursday, shortly after Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp came back online, Durov said on his Telegram channel (via TechCrunch) that “3 million users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours.”

The figure is notable even for Facebook, which boasts more than 2.3 billion monthly active users. Durov never directly ties the Facebook/Instagram outage with the influx of users to Telegram, but he does throw a jab at Facebook by saying that Telegram has “true privacy and unlimited space for everyone.” Read more…

Elon Musk says Autopilot prices are going back up on Monday

TwitterFacebook

Confused about pricing of Tesla cars and features? Get ready to get even more confused.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Autopilot pricing is “reverting to normal” — meaning the prices go back up after they’ve been lowered recently — next Monday.

To recap: In late February, Tesla said it’s moving to online-only sales in order to reduce vehicle prices. Then, a few days ago, the company reversed that decision, saying it’ll keep more stores open, but the prices of vehicles — all but the base price Model 3 — are going up by 3%.  Read more…
