Melinda Gates on why we should invest in women in 2018: “Simply put, women get things done”

TwitterFacebook

It may be a new year, but Melinda Gates is still committed to using her platform and voice to empower women throughout the world.

The co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and well-known philanthropist kicked off 2018 by writing an op-ed for Time, which was guest edited by Bill Gates, titled, “It’s Time for a New Era for Women.”

In the article, Gates examines how powerful, women-led movements and organizations are changing the world, and shares why it’s crucial we start investing in them.

“The year 2017 has been a painful reminder that when men hold most of the power it’s all too easy for them to abuse it. But the moment of reckoning prompted by the ‘Me Too’ conversation has also proven that by coming together and speaking in one voice, women can tip the balance,” Gates began. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Congress passed a stopgap measure on Thursday that will prevent a government shutdown, at least until January. But FWD.us, the organization founded by such tech titans as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, isn’t happy about one thing the spending bill is missing: protection for Dreamers.

Here’s the lucky Redditor who got Secret Santa gifts from Bill Gates this year

TwitterFacebook

Bill Gates participates in Reddit’s Secret Santa event every year … and every year he outdoes himself.

This year’s lucky Redditor was user VietteLLC, who posted the delightful gifts Gates sent her to RedditGifts on Wednesday.

Viette, who hopes to operate her own no-kill cat shelter one day, received — among other things — donations to three of her favorite cat shelters, several Dr. Who items, a Dave Matthews band shirt, a personalized cross-stitch, and an artisanal Austrian snowglobe. As usual, it’s clear that Gates did his research about his recipient’s passions and thoughtfully selected each item with her in mind. Read more…

Bill Gates pledges $100 million of his own fortune to fight Alzheimer’s

TwitterFacebook

Bill Gates just donated a piece of his fortune to advance the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

The philanthropist and Microsoft founder announced in a blog post Monday that he will give $50 million to the Dementia Discovery Fund, a public-private partnership that invests in innovative dementia research. Gates will also donate another $50 million in startups working in Alzheimer’s research.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has a long track record of supporting research to eradicate diseases like malaria and polio. But Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form of dementia that progressively affects memory and other brain functions, is the first noncommunicable disease he’s fighting. Read more…
