Deleted ‘Black Panther’ scene has big reveal about Okoye and W’Kabi

TwitterFacebook

If you left Avengers: Infinity War wanting way more of Wakanda and way less of everything else — hard same.

And we’re in luck, because USA Today released an exclusive clip of a deleted Black Panther scene. It’s a reminder of what makes the film stand out in the Marvel franchise, displaying the incredible depth of its characters while also speaking to real-world cultural issues and questions.

Most scintillatingly, it finally confirms what many suspected: Okoye and W’Kabi are married. And marriage is tough, man.

The scene takes place right after T’Challa loses the King’s Challenge to Erik Killmonger, and is thrown off a waterfall — presumably to his death. Read more…

‘Black Panther’ is already starting to eclipse ‘The Avengers’ at the box office

TwitterFacebook

Keep hailing the king, because Black Panther continues to blow Marvel’s box office expectations to smithereens with the kinetic force of a vibranium suit.

The Ryan Coogler-directed blockbuster was already breaking all sorts of box office records during its opening Presidents Day weekend release. Throughout the rest of the week, though, it only continued the trend, raking in the best Monday and Thursday for any Marvel Cinematic Universe title.

To put that in plain terms: This means Black Panther had the best first week at the box office of any MCU movie ever — bypassing The Avengers‘ $270M with an astounding $292M. And the king didn’t even need the whole pantheon of Marvel heroes like The Avengers did. Wakanda earned these numbers all on its own, with a cast that largely featured previously unknown MCU characters. Read more…

Danai Gurira on how ‘Black Panther’ challenges the conventions of femininity

TwitterFacebook

Having risen to fame through her iconic performance as The Walking Dead‘s Michonne, Danai Gurira is no stranger to female power ripped from the pages of comics.

But in Black Panther, Gurira plays another kind of female warrior — one who wields her womanhood as a strength, and casts femininity in a whole new light in the process.

“Okoye flies in the face of our conventional ideas of femininity, while still functioning within her own definition of femininity,” Gurira told Mashable at the Los Angeles Black Panther press junket.

‘Black Panther’ has the best Marvel supervillain ever. Yes, even better than Loki.

TwitterFacebook

Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

Spoilers ahead for Black Panther.

Black Panther just pulled off a Marvel Cinematic Universe first: A supervillain worth rooting for.

Sure, other MCU baddies have been charming (hello, Hela) or surprising (hi, Mandarin) or sympathetic (we see you, Loki). A couple of them have even made good points – Zemo and Vulture’s grievances felt legitimate, even if their methods of rectifying them did not.

But Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger is all of those things, and something more besides. It’s a truism that every villain sees themselves as the hero in their own story; Killmonger is the first time this has actually felt true in a MCU movie.  Read more…

Shuri from ‘Black Panther’ may be a princess, but she’s queen of our hearts

TwitterFacebook

It’s hard to say who among the incredible cast of characters in Black Panther reigns supreme. But if you ask this writer, there’s be no question: Shuri, T’Challa’s 16-year-old sister and badass princess of Wakanda, deserves to be crowned queen of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Aside from her sheer show-stealing cool factor, Shuri is the brilliant inventor ensuring Wakanda remains the most advanced nation in the world. She equips her brother and their entire people with the cutting-edge vibranium technology, armor, and weaponry that enables them to kick such serious ass – like in that fantastic Busan chase scene.  Read more…

What the end credits scenes for ‘Black Panther’ mean

Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

Spoiler alert: This post contains major spoilers for Black Panther.

It’s a real tragedy that Black Panther had to end – the film’s so good, we wanted to keep it going forever. But at least it went out with a couple of parting shots.

We’re talking, of course, about the two end-credits scenes. One, which comes midway through, puts a final button on a storyline that’s been simmering throughout the movie, and lays the groundwork for things to come; the other may be hinting at big things for a certain character. Read more…

Everything you need to know before watching ‘Black Panther’

TwitterFacebook

This week’s Black Panther marks the first solo feature film for, well, Black Panther. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen him onscreen.

Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, actually made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016, while his nemesis, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), appeared even before that, in 2015.

But if your recall of the previous Marvel movies is fuzzy (or if you never saw them to begin with), don’t fret — we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know.

What other Marvel movies feature Black Panther?

Black Panther’s first (and, until Black Panther, only) appearance in the MCU was in Captain America: Civil War. The film also featured the first glimpses of Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), T’Chaka (John Kani), and Ayo (Florence Kasumba), all of whom return in Black Panther. Read more…

Beyond ‘Black Panther’: A brief history of Afrofuturism

TwitterFacebook

Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

Among the images glimpsed in Marvel’s first Black Panther trailer was a tribal elder in an emerald suit with a matching lip disc, a body modification found in the Suri and Mursi tribes of Ethiopia.

Warriors draped in blue “blankets” (or Seanamarena) soon followed, drawn from the Basotho peoples of South Africa. Alongside them were women in red beaded war garb – the Dora Milaje, Black Panther’s female Royal Guard – their vivid outfits remixed from the Maasai ethnoculture of Kenya and Tanzania.  Read more…
