Marvel had a huge villain problem. Then Phase 3 happened.

TwitterFacebook

There is no point in a hero without a villain.

Captain America is just a guy in a suit if he’s not championing the ideals of truth, honor, and freedom against someone who believes the opposite. Spider-Man needs to do more than web up muggers — he needs to take down the head honcho whose greed is causing all of the crime.

A good villain can make a hero more heroic by comparison. A bad one can feel like a total waste of a hero’s time.

Until Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most of their villains felt like wastes of time.

Marvel wanted Wakandans in ‘Black Panther’ to have British accents

TwitterFacebook

When you’re hearing Wakandans speak in Black Panther, you’re actually hearing the Xhosa accent, which originates from South Africa.

But things could’ve been different if it went Marvel’s way, with the studio apparently wanting a British accent, according to the film’s star Chadwick Boseman.

The film’s dialect coach Beth McGuire told Slate that Xhosa was picked due to the ancestry of South African actor John Kani, who played T’Chaka in the precursor to Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War.

“They felt like it was maybe too much for an audience to take,” Boseman told The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. Read more…

Star Wars: The Force AwakensAvatar. And now, introducing..Black Panther.

As of today, Aug. 5, 2018, the February hit from Marvel Studios has officially crossed the $700 million threshold at the U.S. box office. That’s a huge achievement, one that only three movies in history — the three named above — can claim credit for.

Star Wars is the big winner, having amassed an astonishing $936.7 million during its theatrical run in domestic theaters. The considerably older Avatar (it hit theaters in 2009) comes in as a distant #2, with $760.5 million earned domestically. Read more…

One of the best moments in ‘Infinity War’ was completely improvised

TwitterFacebook

Avengers: Infinity War is such a tightly paced movie that it’s hard to think about improvisation slipping through the cracks of Marvel’s master plan.

But the Russo brothers’s director commentary on the Blu-ray edition of Infinity War (h/t Shadow and Act) reveals that one of the movie’s coolest moments came completely unexpected.

The scene occurs at the beginning of the Battle of Wakanda, where the earthbound Avengers, the Wakandan army, and the Jabari tribe join forces to fight Thanos’s army of space dogs (well, that’s what Rocket likes to call them). As the armies prepare to take the fight to Thanos, Winston Duke’s Chief M’Baku begins a familiar war chant — the same heard in the first challenge and later battle against Killmonger in Black PantherRead more…

The 10 best films of 2018 (so far)

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one thing we’ll say for 2018, it’s that it’s given us a lot of great films. We’re only halfway through the year and already we’ve seen dozens of things we’ve liked, even loved, across all categories – comedies and tragedies, gazillion-dollar blockbusters and low-key indies.

Below, here are some of our absolute favorites.

10Leave No Trace

Writer-director Debra Granik travels even further out to the fringes of society than she did in Winter’s Bone, this time focusing on a traumatized vet father and his teenage daughter, enjoying an idyllic, if unconventional, life out in the wild. But when society catches up to them and forces them to go back on the grid, they’re torn between her desire for a community, and his inability to be part of one. Read more…
