Running a marathon in bad weather conditions? You could use a little support from Spencer.

Competitors faced terrible weather at the Boston Marathon on Monday, with freezing rains and wind making for a tricky day.

One consolation? Spencer the dog, who was rugged up in a rain jacket and waving a flag on the side of the road as runners raced by. What a champion.

The 2018 Boston Marathon took place on Monday and 34-year-old runner Desiree Linden became the first American to win the women’s race in 33 years.

Linden, who represented the United States in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, endured the rain and cold Boston temperatures to take the history-making victory, the first for an American woman in this marathon since 1985. Her time was 2 hours 39 minutes 53 seconds.

Here’s emotional footage of her running across the finish line celebrating by hugging her husband and coach.

On an April morning in 1967, Kathrine Switzer ate a late breakfast of bacon, eggs, pancakes, and toast. The Boston Marathon wasn’t due to begin until noon, so she had plenty of time to get to the starting line.

When the time came, she pinned the number 261 to her chest and started running through the Boston streets with her boyfriend, coach, and friend in tow. Then, in a surprising contrast to the crowd’s cheers, she was attacked by a race official who’d noticed her ponytail and lipstick.

At this time, the Boston Marathon was a men’s-only race, and Switzer wasn’t exactly welcome in the field. After Switzer’s boyfriend warded off the race official by tackling him, Kathrine (registered as K. V. Switzer) crossed the finish line. Her efforts helped make the sport of endurance running more welcoming to women in the decades that followed. Read more…
