Captain Marvel’s shallow take on feminism doesn’t land

TwitterFacebook

This post contains spoilers for Captain Marvel

In the pinnacle moment of Captain Marvel’s final fight sequence, Gwen Stefani’s “I’m Just a Girl” starts playing as Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers kicks everyone’s ass.

The subtext, in case you missed it, is that Carol Danvers might just be a girl. But being just a girl is pretty kick ass.

This moment — and every other one when Marvel seems to suddenly remember that Captain Marvel is its first movie with a solo female lead ever  — summons the same feelings of a modern Dove commercial. It’s a cloying sensation, the off-putting suspicion that your own crushing sense of disempowerment is being exploited to sell you soap.  Read more…

Captain Marvel co-stars Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson have said they are pretty good pals.

But even the best of friends tell the odd lie to each other, and the pair put it to the polygraph test in an episode of Carpool Karaoke, as previewed during The Late Late Show with James Corden on Wednesday night.

One thing we will say, is that one of them is a bad farter.

‘Captain Marvel’ throws back to the ’90s with optical illusion posters designed to make you hate yourself

TwitterFacebook

The Captain Marvel marketing team is back on the nostalgia hype train with the release of five “Magic Eye” posters.

These 3D optical illusions were first made popular through the Magic Eye book series known to pretty much any ’90s kid with a library card, and now continue to haunt those of us who could never see their hidden secrets in the first place.

The pictures’ colorful, abstract patterns are supposed to reveal hidden images when stared at long enough, but personally they make me feel like Star-Lord at the end of Infinity War – that is to say, a disappointment to every living being on this planet including and especially myself. Read more…

Brie Larson, the superhero we all need, just made a tiny Captain Marvel fan’s day.

Hitting the blue carpet on Wednesday at the film’s European Gala held at The Curzon Mayfair in London, Larson dazzled in her royal blue gown.

But the film’s star also met a tiny version of her character Carol Danvers at the event, a young female fan dressed up as the superhero herself.

‘Captain Marvel’ first reactions: A fun, ’90s adventure with a brilliant Carol Danvers

TwitterFacebook

You may believe the hype.

The much-anticipated Captain Marvel had its premiere on Tuesday night, and the first audiences to watch the film have described it as unlike any other MCU film they’ve seen before, and weirder than you’d expect.

The main take away? Well, as Mashable’s Angie Han put it…

#CaptainMarvel: Well, Thanos is fucked.

Other critics and viewers thought there was a strong, nostalgic ’90s feel to the film, and yep, you bet it’s going to be a lot of fun.

#CaptainMarvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really. It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places & badass in all the right places. It remains entertaining because it’s always changing. It’s got the right stuff pic.twitter.com/o7AvqYY63x
