‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman delivers incredibly powerful speech after SAG win

TwitterFacebook

Chadwick Boseman is a superhero, and you’d better believe he gave a speech worthy of a superhero after Black Panther picked up the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture on Sunday.

“To be young, gifted, and black,” Boseman, who plays the lead role of T’Challa, said to the crowd. “We all know what it’s like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured — yet you are young, gifted and black. We know what it’s like to be told, to say there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. We know what it’s like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath and not above. Read more…

Marvel wanted Wakandans in ‘Black Panther’ to have British accents

TwitterFacebook

When you’re hearing Wakandans speak in Black Panther, you’re actually hearing the Xhosa accent, which originates from South Africa.

But things could’ve been different if it went Marvel’s way, with the studio apparently wanting a British accent, according to the film’s star Chadwick Boseman.

The film’s dialect coach Beth McGuire told Slate that Xhosa was picked due to the ancestry of South African actor John Kani, who played T’Chaka in the precursor to Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War.

“They felt like it was maybe too much for an audience to take,” Boseman told The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. Read more…

Blake Lively, Chadwick Boseman, Lana Del Rey and more showed up — and showed out — at the 2018 Met Gala

TwitterFacebook

By now, I pray you’ve seen Pope Rihanna blessing us all with her Met Gala ensemble – or Ariana Grande providing us a literal example of the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme.

While there were folks who chose to come in what were basically insanely expensive prom dresses, there were others who stuck with the night’s religious motif and probably made Anna Wintour very proud. Some went very literal — Sarah Jessica Parker’s altar or Zendaya’s Joan of Arc interpretation — and others, like Jaden Smith, just looked really really cool. Here are our favorites from the first Monday of May.  Read more…

Chadwick Boseman helps stop white people from ruining the Wakanda salute

TwitterFacebook

Riddle us this: Why is the idea of a white person loving Black Panther great, while the idea of a white person doing the Wakanda salute sounds not quite right?

Well Saturday Night Live took advantage of having Chadwick Boseman — the king himself — as host to clarify the nuances of loving Black Panther while white: “See the problem is we as black people know that the salute comes from Egyptian kings who were buried right hand over left to clutch the royal scepter.”

Boseman’s character might be right spiritually, but perhaps doesn’t speak for all black people distressed by white fans claiming the salute of a fictional, uncolonized African nation for themselves. Read more…
