Instagram’s fundraiser stickers could lure credit card numbers

Mark Zuckerberg recently revealed that commerce is a huge part of the 2019 roadmap for Facebook’s family of apps. But before people can easily buy things from Instagram etc, Facebook needs their credit card info on file. That’s a potentially lucrative side effect of Instagram’s plan to launch a Fundraiser sticker in 2019. Facebook’s own Donate […]

Make a donation and take home a Tesla: How Omaze is using prizes to boost charitable giving

TwitterFacebook

Picture this: You’re standing at the drugstore register when the cashier asks if you’d like to donate to charity. You’re pressed for time, you don’t quite hear her, you’re in your own little world — whatever the excuse, you walk out of the store without making a donation.

But what if a little bit of charitable giving could land you a brand new Tesla? Raise your hand if that totally changes the game.

Such is the concept with Omaze, a site that makes giving to a good cause fun and beneficial for everybody. And yes: they’re actually giving away a Tesla.

The way Omaze works is simple: Make a donation starting as low as $10 and get a number of entries to win the prize. The more you give, the more entries and chances you’ll have to win a brand new 2018 Tesla Model S P100D, an electric car with a record-breaking battery life. While $10 gets you 100 entries, donation increments go all the way up to $5,000, which would get you 50,000 entries and seriously increase your chances of taking this slick car home with you. (Don’t worry: There are plenty of price tiers in between.) Read more…

Skydiving is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. Well, it was also on Irene O’Shea’s, but she decided to use the experience in the name of charity. The 102-year-old aimed to raise awareness and money for motor neurone disease, which took the life of her daughter years ago. This is the third time O’ Shea has jumped out of plane with the help of SA Skydiving, and she’s just as cool about it. They say this jump officially makes her the world’s oldest skydiver! With initiatives like Giving Tuesday on November 27, today’s global community has greater opportunities than ever before to help those in need. A credit to the internet’s shrinking of the globe, social platforms and always-on digital media can shine a constant spotlight on causes, organizations, and communities that otherwise might slip under our attention—and on the broader importance of giving back our time, resources, and money to charity, whomever we choose as their recipients

But the question remains of just how to best help others. In America, do we prefer to give our money or volunteer our time when considering our own charitable efforts? According to a recent Citi study, 55% of people who do not contribute their time to positive social change causes wish they could, and two out of three people who do contribute their time wish it was easier to do so. In other words, people want to give their time and skills to charitable causes, not just their money. Read more…

Omara never envisioned her life path would lead to entrepreneurship. She’d struggled with addiction, experienced homelessness, lost custody of her kids, and spent time in prison. She rarely received positive affirmation from those around her — she’d never been called beautiful.

But two weeks into a new job, Omara’s life took a decidedly different turn. She’d secured employment in a role as a production associate at The Giving Keys, a social enterprise based in Los Angeles, and found herself being showered with empowering, affirming messages from her colleagues. She was called beautiful for the first time in her life — and she started to believe that the praise she was hearing was true. Read more…
