Fragile climate talks begin in the wake of Trump’s trashing of Paris Climate Agreement

During a year of climate confrontation, the world has closed ranks around the Paris deal struck in 2015.

Momentum was “irreversible”, said a statement released by the German, French and Italian leaders in the hours after Donald Trump said he would leave or “renegotiate” the accord.

Global warming is real. It’s happening because of human activities, and it’s on the cusp of pushing the climate toward tipping points or other “unforeseen consequences” that could reshape the planet as we know it, warns a new federal report released on Friday.

Nations around the world still aren’t doing nearly enough to limit greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, a new report warns.

While progress is being made, a new United Nations report says that collectively countries aren’t on track to contain global warming to the level set by leaders in the Paris Climate Agreement. We are currently on course to see between 3 and 3.2 degrees Celsius, or about 5.8 degrees Fahrenheit, of warming by the year 2100.

To put this another way, countries have only committed to about one-third of the emissions reductions needed to meet the Paris Agreement’s temperature target, the report found.  Read more…

Earth is seeing an unprecedented surge in carbon dioxide levels, with disturbing implications

Although many countries are making progress in slowing their emissions of carbon dioxide, a global warming pollutant, the amount of the gas in the air surged at a record pace in 2016, a new report found.
