Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel.

So you’ve just seen Captain Marvel. And you even stayed all the way through the end credits like a good Marvel fan. But you maybe need a bit of help parsing what exactly those two scenes at the very end were about.

1Captain Marvel catches up to Avengers: Infinity War

She'll be back.

She’ll be back.

What happens: We’re in the post-Infinity War days, as evidenced by a ten-figure “global missing” count on the wall of an Avengers facility. In a corner, Captain Marvel’s beeper (which she left with Nick Fury at the end of her movie) is beeping, until suddenly it’s not. Read more…

Everything you need to know about Captain Marvel’s cat

TwitterFacebook

Technically, Captain Marvel is the lead of Captain Marvel. But for the cat lovers out there, it’ll be Goose who emerges as the real star of the show.

The orange tabby first popped up in the Captain Marvel teaser poster before making her way into the trailers, into her own character poster, and – naturally – into our hearts. Here’s everything you’ll want to know about Goose ahead of Captain Marvel

Yes, Goose is from the comics

‘Captain Marvel’ feels at once fresh and familiar

TwitterFacebook

Captain Marvel unambiguously represents a fresh new face for the Marvel Cinematic Universe — she is, as you’ve surely heard by now, the franchise’s first solo female movie lead.

Yet Captain Marvel, the movie surrounding her, feels, for better or for worse, like so much of what has come before it.

The tone strikes that familiar mix of earnest heroism and relatable humor. The action sequences rely less on clever choreography and camerawork than on shiny CG and emotional resonance. Much of the plot hinges on twists we’ve seen in other Marvel movies.

And despite the intergalactic premise and period setting — Captain Marvel a.k.a. Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, starts out as an alien soldier in the 1990s — the sets largely resemble that nondescript airplane hangar from Captain America: Civil WarRead more…

‘Captain Marvel’ is (kinda) the Nick Fury prequel you’ve been waiting for

TwitterFacebook

It’s not quite the Nick Fury solo film we’ve been clamoring for, but Captain Marvel might be the next best thing. For now, anyway.

While it’s no secret that Samuel L. Jackson’s S.H.I.E.L.D. agent character appears in the movie, what Marvel fans should know is that this isn’t just another one of his surprise post-credits cameos.

Jackson is a major character in Captain Marvel – to the point that, during our visit to the set last spring, producer Jonathan Schwartz described the film as a “two-hander” between Fury and Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson). Read more…

‘Glass’ tries and fails to shatter the comic book movie formula

TwitterFacebook

Watching Glass is like going to the movies with that one friend who cannot help leaning over to whisper one banal observation after another into your ear, and then leaning back satisfied that he’s just blown your mind.

“In comics, this is referred to as the ‘showdown,'” explains Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) during the climax — assuming, I guess, that no one listening has ever read a comic or seen a movie before.

Glass is M. Night Shyamalan’s sequel to his Unbreakable and Split, and like Unbreakable before it, wants to be a deconstruction of the superhero genre. But where Unbreakable was meticulous, re-examining well-worn tropes through well-drawn characters, Glass is uncontrolled. It doesn’t so much analyze or update those tropes as it does lampshade them, and call it a day. Read more…
