Henry Golding’s movie mom is still very hard to impress in this ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ sketch

James Corden will apparently go to great lengths to win the approval of your mom.

At least, he will if you’re Henry Golding and your movie mum is played by Michelle Yeoh.

Corden starts out by declaring “I love mums, mums love me,” but that clearly doesn’t apply to Yeoh, who is in character as the (rather intimidating) mom from Crazy Rich Asians.

I want to make this clear: you’re not good enough for our family. You’re not even good enough for you own family,Yeoh tells Corden after discovering that his dumpling folding skills are not quite up to par.

Still — he manages to win her over in the end. Read more…

Yep, an accountant helped find ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ star Henry Golding

You’ve probably already heard about the reluctance Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding had when it came to auditioning for his role.

Despite his lack of acting experience, Golding was tracked down by the film’s director Jon M. Chu and eventually given the lead role.

The smooth-talking actor can thank an accountant, Lisa-Kim Kuan, for all of his future Hollywood troubles. Kuan passed on Golding’s name to Chu, which led to the discovery of the star.

“If you’re out there Lisa Kim, I still owe you one. I love you Lisa!” Golding told Jimmy Fallon last week. Read more…

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is getting its sequel – and it’s great news for one fan-favorite character

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Crazy Rich Asians, which isn’t really a spoiler-y movie, but we don’t know your life.

The box office success of John M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians has sealed the deal and development is moving forward on a sequel.

This is no ordinary followup in our Age of Sequels; the second film will be based once again on author Kevin Kwan’s work, this time on the actual Crazy Rich Asians sequel, China Rich Girlfriend.

“We have a plan with Kevin for the next two films,” producer Brad Simpson told the Hollywood Reporter, also referring to the final piece of the trilogy, Rich People Problems. Read more…

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and the immense pressure to feel seen

TwitterFacebook

Recently, the LA Times asked me to name the first time I saw myself represented onscreen. The answer I gave the interviewer was long and winding and delved into the many different ways I have and haven’t seen myself at the movies – demographically, relationally, emotionally.

By the time it got to print, though, it had been pared down to nine words: “I don’t know that I’ve ever had the experience.” Fair enough.

But that’s changing now, at least in theory. After decades of little to no Asian representation in American pop culture, we find ourselves now in a veritable boomThe Meg, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Searching are all out this month; Bao and Kim’s Convenience hit last month; Killing Eve is up for Emmys next month; and Fresh Off the Boat is back the month after that.  Read more…
