Twitter’s introduces a battery-saving ‘Lights Out’ dark mode option

As promised back in January by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, the company today is rolling out an even darker version of the app’s existing dark mode. Before, Twitter’s dark theme was more of a blue-ish shade instead of a true black, which not everyone seemed to like. Now, there’s an optional setting that makes the […]

Twitter’s new dark mode is actually black and it’s glorious

TwitterFacebook

One of the best design trends of the last year or so is the rise of dark themes for popular apps. If you spend a lot of time staring at screens, dark modes are both easier on the eyes and your battery life.

Now, Twitter is making its dark mode even better, with a new darker theme that’s actually black (as opposed to the previous navy blue-tinged color scheme) and the ability to enable dark mode automatically.

With the changes (which are out on iOS now), Twitter is adding a blacker variation of dark mod  called “Lights Out.” Unlike the app’s previous dark theme, Lights Out is actually black – “a pure black color palette that emits no light since the pixels are turned off,” according to Twitter. Here’s what it looks like compared to the old night mode (which is still available and now labeled as “Dim” in the app.)  Read more…

Slack’s new mobile dark mode is available for beta users

TwitterFacebook

Nobody loves staring at a bright white screen all day, which is why dark versions of popular apps are useful for people whose eyes need a break. Workplace communication tool Slack has finally joined the ranks of apps that offer a dark mode — but there’s a catch.

Dark mode for iOS and Android Slack users is only available in beta for the present moment. If you’re not already in the Slack beta, it’s not hard to sign up — but there’s no telling when your tester availability will be approved.

Ah so Dark Mode is only available on our mobile betas specifically. You can signup here! https://t.co/LpGBPaKF54

How to enable ‘dark mode’ in 10 popular mobile apps

TwitterFacebook

In the past year or so, several apps (and even entire operating systems, like macOS Mojave) have gotten a feature typically called “dark mode,” which is essentially a new color scheme with light text on a dark background.

I’m a big fan of the dark mode. Not only does it save battery — it requires more energy to light up a laptop or a phone screen with a slab of bright white than a dark grey or black — but it also makes everything look cool.

We’re still waiting for some major platforms to get a dark mode — Android is nearly there, for example — but you can already get it on a number of popular mobile apps, including YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Twitter and more.  Read more…

Next version of Android might finally get a dark theme

TwitterFacebook

Programmers, night owls and dark lords have been asking for a system-wide dark theme on Android since forever, and it seems Google has finally listened.

Android Q, which is currently in the very early stages, has a built-in dark theme — and several other interesting new features — according to XDA Developers.

According to the report, the early Android Q variant that XDA managed to run on the Google Pixel 3 XL has a “fully functional system-wide dark mode,” which can be enabled in the Display Settings by choosing “Set Dark Mode.” Once enabled, it turns all the menus in Android to a pleasant white-text-on-dark-grey-surface color scheme.
