Stephen Colbert reveals the truth behind these Donald Trump ‘deepfakes’

TwitterFacebook

The era of “deepakes” has been a scary one a we live with the fear of how more nefarious people might manipulate videos in the future to create legitimate “fake news.”

Thankfully, the folks at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert have found a way in to the subject that actually makes us laugh: by turning the concept on its head via President Donald Trump.

While the gag is pretty one note — Trump’s speeches are actually deepfakes of children throwing tantrums or of Vladimir Putin speaking — it’s a smart way in to a standard Trump joke that makes it feel fresh and relevant again.

So until a deep fake that actually fools us all into real consequences comes along, at least we have this to make us laugh and keep from crying.  Read more…

Social media should have “duty of care” towards kids, UK MPs urge

Social media platforms are being urged to be far more transparent about how their services operate and to make “anonymised high-level data” available to researchers so the technology’s effects on users — and especially on children and teens — can be better understood. The calls have been made in a report by the UK parliament’s […]

Porn company offers to turn customers into adult film stars using deepfakes

TwitterFacebook

When deepfakes burst onto the scene last year, it didn’t take long for the new image-manipulation technology to go from harmless online fun to troubling tool for online harassment. However, one company is looking to shift the conversation back, strangely enough, with porn.

One of the first uses of deepfakes was the swapping the faces of porn actors and actresses with those of celebrities, a big part of what led to deepfake bans across the web. However, the adult film company Naughty America is looking to flip the telescope on that kind of scenario and make it 100 percent consensual.

Naughty America’s new service lets customers insert images of themselves into scenes, transport porn stars to a whole new setting by changing the background, and, in one example, blend together the facial features of two different actors. The company uploaded a number of samples here, which are obviously not safe for work. Read more…

The U.S. Defense Department is readying for the battle against deepfakes

TwitterFacebook

The U.S. Defense Department is already preparing itself for the fight against deepfakes, fake audio and video created by artificial intelligence that burst into the mainstream last year thanks to sites like Reddit.

According to MIT Technology Review, the development of tech to catch deepfakes is currently underway. Through the Media Forensics program run by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), researchers have already built some of the tools to expose these fake AI creations. The Media Forensics program was actually originally set up to automate existing forensic tools, however its mission changed due to the concern over the rise of deepfakes. The project’s deepfake mission was announced earlier this year. Read more…

Forget DeepFakes, Deep Video Portraits are way better (and worse)

The strange, creepy world of “deepfakes,” videos (often explicit) with the faces of the subjects replaced by those of celebrities, set off alarm bells just about everywhere early this year. And in case you thought that sort of thing had gone away because people found it unethical or unconvincing, the practice is back with the highly convincing “Deep Video Portraits,” which refines and improves the technique.
