‘Destiny 2’ is changing up Gambit in a big way for the new season

TwitterFacebook

Season of the Drifter marks the next phase of Destiny 2‘s life, and the first chapter since developer Bungie’s split with Activision in January. It brings a major new wrinkle to Gambit, the competitive-meets-cooperative mode that launched with Sept. 2018’s Forsaken expansion, called Gambit Prime.

This eight and a half minute reveal runs through the new mode, as well as the various other additions and changes coming in Drifter — including a first peek at how the highest levels of Destiny play will evolve in the next season.

It’s set to kick off on March 5 for anyone who has an Annual Pass for the year that started with Forsaken. Read more…

Bungie takes back its Destiny and departs from Activision

Bungie, creator of the popular Halo and Destiny franchises, is splitting from publisher Activision and will go its own way, the company announced today. It’s almost certainly good news for gamers and the company itself, but it also won’t fix the problems that plagued Destiny and its sequel since their launches.

Bungie gets full rights for ‘Destiny’ after cutting ties with Activision

Bungie and Activision are no longer working together.

In a joint statement from both Bungie and Activision, the two companies announced Thursday that will be cutting ties with each other. All publishing rights of the Bungie-developed series Destiny will be handed over to bungie by Activision at an unspecified date.

Black Armory brings a fresh arsenal and a whole new raid to ‘Destiny 2’

TwitterFacebook

On Dec. 4, Destiny 2‘s Black Armory will open its doors to players for the first time. The new Tower location is just one piece of a larger addition to the game, and the first since September’s foundation-shaking Forsaken launched.

Central to Black Armory is the titular forge, or really, set of forges. The new Tower vendor ADA-1 will be your guide to exploring these new locations, all of which are built into existing Destiny 2 destinations. They’re tied to a new three-player survival activity that gives Guardians an opportunity to craft gear from the new weapon pool.

Also coming with the launch of Black Armory is a new raid — not a smaller raid lair, as was common among Destiny 2 expansions during its first year of release. The Black Armory raid, called Scourge of the Past, invites players to explore a rarely-visited, often-clamored-for destination in Destiny lore: the Last City. In typical raid fashion, expect to wait a bit before Scourge joins the rest of the Black Armory content. Read more…

‘Destiny 2: Forsaken’ works because it makes FOMO a part of the game

TwitterFacebook

Most games build their escapist fantasy around the idea of making your hero the center of everything. Destiny does it instead by giving you, the person playing the game, the most intense FOMO.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is a new expansion of the hit 2017 game that aims to right the ship after a rocky first year. So much of my first week with it has been characterized by excited IM and DM exchanges peppered between lengthy, almost binge-level play sessions.

Destiny fans geek out over these tiny details that read like incomprehensible gobbledygook to people on the outside. For all that it adds to the game in big ways — new story, missions, gear, activities — Forsaken is here to smooth over tons and tons of those tiny details. And that’s what makes describing its success to any non-fans out there so challenging. Read more…

‘Destiny 2: Forsaken’ will shake things up, but how did we get here?

TwitterFacebook

It was Sept. 6, 2017, the day Destiny 2 launched, and four of the principal creative minds behind it were right where they wanted to be: At home, playing the game.

“I think, honestly, I was home on my couch playing with my dad. That’s what I remember of the Destiny 2 launch day,” game director Chris Barrett said.

He wasn’t alone, either. Franchise director Luke Smith was at home, playing, too. So were Steve Cotton and Scott Taylor, Bungie veterans who both went on to serve as project leads on Forsaken, the one-year-later Destiny 2 expansion that just released on Sept. 4.

It’s helpful to know what these four Bungie principals — and many of their co-workers — were up to on launch day last year because their fandom is critical to Destiny’s continued existence.  Read more…

In ‘Forsaken,’ Bungie is taking care to put ‘Destiny 2’ fans first

TwitterFacebook

It’s not that Destiny 2 is broken. But it does need some fixing.

As many have observed, Bungie repeated a bunch of mistakes over the past year that first cropped up — and were eventually corrected — in the original game. As a result, many fans have come to feel that the sequel is a step back. But Forsaken, the upcoming Sept. 2018 expansion, is meant to right the ship.

Bungie has heard your complaints and absorbed your feedback. The studio’s leadership recognizes that it’s not just a matter of monitoring the subreddit and other social channels; engaging with people directly, absent the ambient noise of the internet, can be far more valuable. Read more…

‘Destiny 2’s newest raid, Spire of Stars, is proving difficult

TwitterFacebook

The latest Destiny 2 raid lair, Spire of Stars, launched on Friday, and players are finding it rather difficult to finish.

Spire of Stars sends players back into the Leviathan for a third time to fight against Emporer Calus and the Cabal. Hours after the raid launched, players are still working their way through the challenging encounters — those players that reach the recommended power level, that is.

“This vestige of my power shall be your key to the wonders of the Leviathan.”
