Guy films brilliant ad to auction off his girlfriend’s used car, but it worked too well

Apparently, you can sometimes do too well at something.

Filmmaker Max Lanman found that out the hard way, after eBay pulled down an auction he had set up to sell his girlfriend’s car.

Lanman had earlier filmed a commercial to sell the 1996 Honda Accord. We’re talking aerial driving shots, coastal roads, a great script — the works. 

The beautifully shot video quickly went viral and reached over three million views — and ended up pushing up the eBay going price to $150,000, up from Lanman’s initial asking price of just $499.

According to the filmmaker, who posted an update in a comment on YouTube, eBay’s fraud department couldn’t believe the huge amount of money that was being offered for the car, and mistakenly cancelled the auction. Read more…

Target, Walmart, and Ebay are pushing Christmas way too early

Halloween’s over, and Christmas is right around the corner.

At least that’s how the retail gatekeepers of America’s ever-elongating holiday shopping season now see it.

Ebay and Walmart are already breaking out the tinsel this week with yuletide promotionsAmazon’s Black Friday deals are already being teased. Meanwhile, Target has outdone them both by vowing to keep festivities within a respectable window (*at a small number of stores) and then immediately decorating its sales racks with an an odd mix of candy corn and canes days before it was even time to trick-or-treat. 

“There’s simply no reason to wait for Black Friday to find the best prices or top gifts this holiday season when shoppers can start AND finish early with eBay,” Ebay chief marketing officer Suzy Deering said in the site’s holiday deal announcement. Read more…
