Someone just attempted to hack the DNC’s voter database

An attempt has just been made, once again, to hack the Democratic National Committee. This time, the target: the Democratic Party’s voter database.

CNN is reporting that on Tuesday, the DNC reached out to the FBI to inform them of the attempted hack after a cybersecurity firm discovered a website that faked the look of VoteBuilder, the party’s voter database login page.

The cybersecurity firm that first found the fake page, Lookout, does not work for the DNC, but itimmediately reached out to the party upon discovering the hacking attempt.  Read more…

Former Apple employee arrested for allegedly stealing self-driving car secrets

While Apple has never officially announced its secret self-driving car project, you can certainly consider this to be a confirmation.

On July 7, a former Apple employee was arrested by federal authorities at the Mineta San Jose International Airport while attempting to board a last minute flight to China. Federal prosecutors have charged Xiaolang Zhang, who had worked as a hardware engineer on Apple’s self-driving car project before abruptly leaving the company, with stealing trade secrets.

Zhang had started working at Apple designing hardware and software for its autonomous car project in May 2015. According to the criminal complaint, Zhang “designed and tested circuit boards to analyze sensor data.” Read more…

FBI reportedly overestimated inaccessible encrypted phones by thousands

The FBI seems to have been caught fibbing again on the topic of encrypted phones. FBI director Christopher Wray estimated in December that it had almost 7,800 phones that investigators were unable to access from 2017 alone. The real number is likely less than a quarter of that.

Box that unlocks iPhones is the hottest new gadget for police

Law enforcement agencies — despite protests from privacy advocates — have long lobbied to get access to your smartphone.

Now a mysterious U.S. startup called Grayshift — which reportedly has an ex-Apple security engineer on staff — is providing iPhone unlocking tools to cops, according to Motherboard.

GrayKey is a box that measures four by four inches wide, and features two Lightning cables at the front, as per a post by security software company Malwarebytes. 

According to Forbes, Grayshift claims the device only works with iOS 10 and 11, with iOS 9 compatibility slated for the future. Devices ranging from the iPhone X to the 6 are supported, as are various iPad models. Read more…
