In a telling sign of the state of bike sharing, Mobike, a once red-hot startup that attracted billions in investment capital, is closing down all international operations and putting its sole focus on China. On Friday, Mobike laid off its operations teams in APAC, which entailed more than 15 full-time employees and many more contractors […]

Urban unicorn renewal
Three cities, three dead urban unicorn renewal projects. In just the past few days, we’ve had Foxconn renege on Wisconsin, Amazon renege on NYC, and GE renege on Boston. Each followed the Anna Karenina principle that every unhappy economic development deal is unhappy in its own way: for Foxconn, it was trade tariffs and slowing […]
View More Urban unicorn renewalDid New York lose anything with Amazon’s rejection? It’s complicated.
Now that Amazon has said that it’s taking its ball and going home rather than deal with mean, pushy New Yorkers, outside observers are giving off the sense that the city (and its local politicians) are losing out for their recalcitrance. They’re wrong. New York City is running at about a 4.3% unemployment rate — […]

It seems Foxconn’s plans for a $10 billion Wisconsin plant are back on. After a couple of years of back and forths, the manufacturing giant says it’s recommitting to plans for a plant in the upper Midwest. A statement today cited a phone call between chairman/founder Terry Gou and Donald Trump. “After productive discussions between […]

Foxconn is even more aggressively cutting back its growth ambitions around the world than we previously thought. In addition to the news yesterday that Foxconn intends to scale back its plans for a $10 billion factory in Wisconsin, leaving that state in something of a lurch, we have now learned that the Taiwanese company intends […]

Wow, it’s almost like Trump made a promise the real world can’t support.
In 2017, Chinese Apple supplier Foxconn broke ground on a factory in Wisconsin that it said would bring 13,000 manufacturing jobs to the US. President Trump even marked the occasion with a White House ceremony to hail his ability to return blue collar jobs to the midwest.
Now, Reuters reports that Foxconn is reconsidering plans for its Wisconsin plant.

Well that didn’t last long. In 2017, Foxconn announced the largest investment of a foreign company in the United States when it selected Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin for a new manufacturing facility. Buttressed by huge economic development grants from Wisconsin, an endorsement from President Trump, and Foxconn CEO Terry Gou’s vision of a maker America, the […]

It’s becoming very possible that your next iPhone may be made in India.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the largest Apple iPhone manufacturer, Foxconn, is currently looking into plans to assemble the devices in India. Foxconn is the Taiwanese company contracted by Apple to manufacture the iPhone.
Foxconn executives are currently determining whether the company should include “an India project” in its budget, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The plan would see even Apple’s high-end smartphone models produced in the world’s second most populous country.
Earlier reports out of India hinted at the possible change late last year. According to The Hindu, Foxconn was planning to begin manufacturing iPhones out of a plant in Sriperumbudur in early 2019. While the plan seems unlikely to occur that soon, senior Foxconn officials are planning to visit India next month, according to the WSJ. Read more…

Your next iPhone may be manufactured in India
Apple is bringing its iPhone production to India partially thanks to the looming threats and impacts of the China-U.S. trade war.
Early in 2019, Apple’s high-end smartphones will start being assembled from a Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur, as first reported in The Hindu. While Foxconn, the Taiwanese company contracted by Apple to manufacture the iPhone, already makes phones in India, this will mark the first time the company has made iPhones in the country.
Foxconn will spend $365 million to expand the plant and may create as many as 25,000 new jobs in India according to an Industries Minister in the country speaking to Reuters. According to another source, the expansion will allow Apple to manufacture the more expensive models like the iPhone X line in the country. Read more…
