If you were wondering when the jokes about Fyre Festival are likely to stop, the answer would appear to be: not anytime soon.

This year’s BRIT Awards took place on Wednesday, and the show wasted no time laying into the infamous festival that sparked two recent documentaries on Netflix and Hulu.

The Awards show’s opening video introduces the “Bryt Festival”, before a dancing Jack Whitehall pops up to showcase the “ultimate VIP packages” of yep, you guessed it — cheese and bread.

See if you spot all the in-jokes they’ve managed to cram into 60 seconds. Read more…

Fyre Festival designer Oren Aks says he’s proud of the work he did with FuckJerry

TwitterFacebook

You probably remember Oren Aks as the often exasperated former FuckJerry employee who was featured in the Hulu documentary Fyre Fraud.

The graphic designer managed the disastrous festival’s social media accounts but quit the company about six months after the festival fell apart. After Hulu’s documentary was released, Twitter users voiced their support (and thirst) for him — even Chrissy Teigen gave him a shout out.

Hi. It is me. Oren Aks. I’m actually the designer behind the festival. I’m happy to be here. Would love to make some cheese sandwiches with you @chrissyteigen sometime 🙃

A campaign to unfollow the Fyre Festival promoters is gaining traction

TwitterFacebook

If you want to understand the zeitgeist of the last decade, just scroll through FuckJerry’s Instagram account — it’s a growing archive of viral jokes and videos sourced from every corner of the internet. But social media users are over FuckJerry’s unfair content stealing, and #FuckFuckJerry is working.

Comedians are leading the campaign to unfollow FuckJerry, a massive meme account and media giant that “curates” and reposts content from other creators. The account is run by Elliot Tebele and a team from Jerry Media, and since its creation in 2011 has gained a following of 14.3 million.

The blowjob guy from Fyre Fest doc is totally cool with your blowjob memes

TwitterFacebook

If you’ve watched Netflix’s Fyre Fest documentary, than you definitely know Andy King, the festival producer that Billy McFarland asked to perform oral sex with a customs agent in return for getting water to the festival site.

It’s one of the most jaw-dropping scenes in a movie full of them, and it has inspired a legion of memes — memes it turns out that King is totally cool with.

In a video released on Tuesday afternoon by Netflix, King says, in a fun bit of wordplay, “I’m completely blown away by the response to the documentary.”

King admits he had no idea before his suddent fame what “trending” meant, and he admits to originally pronouncing the word “meme” as “me me,” which is hilarious considering King was supposed to help McFarland rescue his “festival” built on a mountain of social media scams savvy.  Read more…

What you should know about Billy McFarland’s pre-Fyre Fest scam Magnises

TwitterFacebook

Fyre Festival may have been two years ago, but the drama that led up to the entire mess is still unfolding.

Since the release of two back-to-back documentaries about the disastrous music festival, Fyre founder Billy McFarland is back in the spotlight. McFarland was a professional grifter even before scamming festival attendees out of millions of dollars. With his company Magnises, he managed to swindle investors into backing his glorified fraternity.

Although Magnises claimed to be a luxury credit card, it was essentially a membership for millennials who wanted to be rich, but couldn’t afford to be rich. Members would have their credit or debit card copied over to a magnetic strip mounted onto a metal card — instead of its own financial institution, Magnises promised its members social perks like last minute Beyoncé tickets and access to an exclusive townhouse with an open barMembership was “referral only” to add to its exclusivity.  Read more…

Fyre Festival’s CMO Grant Margolin appears to be working again … as a business tutor

TwitterFacebook

Grant Margolin, the chief marketing officer of the colossal disaster that was Fyre Festival, seemed to drop off the face of the Earth after the event.

The festival’s founder and CEO, Billy McFarland, is serving six years in prison for defrauding over 100 investors out of $27.4 million. But Margolin, who is portrayed in both recent Fyre Festival documentaries as McFarland’s right-hand man, settled out of court and has kept a low profile.

All the documentaries managed to say about what he does now is that he volunteers as an EMT.

But now it seems Margolin has been found — selling his services in New York City as a tutor, specializing in business and marketing, for $90 an hour. But we’ll get back to that.  Read more…

Hulu takes another dig at Netflix, drops its price to just $5.99 per month

TwitterFacebook

Just as Netflix’s prices go up, Hulu’s are going down.

Hulu has announced today that its reducing the price of its ad-supported subscription plan to $5.99 per month. The current price for Hulu’s lowest-tiered plan is $7.99 per month.. The company’s “no ads” plan will remain priced at $11.99 per month.

This move comes just a week after the streaming service’s biggest competitor, Netflix, unveiled its largest price increase ever. The price of Netflix’s most popular plan is now $13 per month.

However, the move to undercut Netflix’s prices isn’t the first time Hulu’s taken a swipe at its competitor this month. Last week, amid Netflix’s big promotion for the upcoming release of its anticipated Fyre Festival documentary, Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, Hulu dropped a surprise. It released its own Fyre Festival documentary, Fyre Fraud, before Netflix’s film. Read more…
