Amazon is remaking ‘Lord of the Rings’ as a series because everyone wants their own ‘Game of Thrones’

The rumors are true: Amazon Studios is moving ahead with a small-screen adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy series The Lord of the Rings, despite the fact that Peter Jackson’s film trilogy was pretty much perfect and a remake is wholly unnecessary. (We won’t speak of The Hobbit franchise.)

Amazon has acquired global television rights to the series and given it a multi-season commitment, which will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring,” according to a company release, implying that the show may weave in aspects of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, since that story involves a number of characters who later reappear in Lord of the Rings. The prophecy of my 2013 Tumblr entry “Khal Drogo and Tormund go to bar and become friends” has at last come true.

While briefly in Belfast promoting Justice League, Jason Momoa had a night out with the cast of Game of Thones, who are filming in the area. Momoa wrote about it on Instagram, revealing that it was the first time he’s met Kristofer Hivju (AKA Tormund Giantsbane).

“I love seeing all my friends and new ones @khivju your a fucking legend,” Momoa wrote — EXACTLY as I predicted all those years ago.

Everyone’s favourite list-keeper and Frey-slayer, a.k.a. Maisie Williams, recently spoke to BBC Newsbeat about her plans after Game of Thrones is over.

From the sounds of it, she can’t wait.

“I’m really excited for Game of Thrones to finish and there’s going to be time for me to do whatever I want,” Williams said.
