Celebrate the birth of the World Wide Web with this Google Doodle

TwitterFacebook

March 12, 1989 was a big day in the annals of digital history.

It was on that day that Tim Berners-Lee proposed the idea of what we’ve come to call the World Wide Web. And so Google has decided to celebrate in classic Google style: with a Doodle

The Doodle, which at the time of this writing is available to our friends living on the other side of the International Date Line (what up, Mashable Australia), depicts an old-school computer slowly downloading an image of a rotating Earth — dial-up modem and all.

Notably, in a blog post announcing the internet’s 30th anniversary, Google makes an effort to head off any possible pedantic ramblings regarding the web versus the internet.  Read more…

Steve Irwin gets his own Google Doodle to commemorate his birthday

TwitterFacebook

On Friday, the late Steve Irwin would’ve turned 49.

To commemorate the late animal conservationist and TV personality, who passed away in 2006, Google will unveil a Doodle in his honour.

The main Doodle features Steve holding on to a crocodile, as he was remembered for. It’s animated, so when users click through, there’s more images with the family and other animals.

“Today’s Google Doodle acknowledges the life and achievements of my husband Steve Irwin, whose efforts to protect wildlife and wild places have been recognised as the most extensive of any conservationist,” Terri Irwin, the wife of Steve, wrote in a blog post. Read more…

Google’s new Doodle is a terrifyingly addictive Halloween game you can play with friends

TwitterFacebook

Google’s Doodles — near-daily re-imaginings of the company logo — have become so elaborate in recent years that it was only a matter of time until the company turned the Doodle into a full-fledged, multiplayer game.

So, this Halloween, we’ve got the Great Ghoul Duel. The game is a simple but playable arcade in which you, a ghost, team up with other ghosts to collect “Spirit Flames.”

To play, move around with arrow keys, collect little flame thingies, which add up behind you, creating a tail of sorts. Bring them to your base to collect bonuses such as a speed boost. Whichever team has the most of these when the game timer’s up, wins.  Read more…
