Podcasts were my friends when I had none

Welcome to No Shame November! This week we’re diving into the pop culture we love that society tells us we shouldn’t.

Alone in my apartment, chewing on cheap takeout lo mein, rocking the same sweatpants for a fifth day in a row—again. Six months after finishing my bachelor’s degree, this was how I found myself: a post-grad poltergeist haunting my New York City abode like a metropolitan Boo Radley. Isolated. Lonely. Things had gotten bad.

My life hadn’t always been this bleak. As a senior in college, I had lived with my two best friends, Sarah and Ellie, a pair of girls more akin to criminal accomplices than sorority sisters. For ten glorious months, we inhabited Apartment 1012 with reckless abandon, setting off smoke detectors, rescuing stray cats, and pissing off just the right number of resident advisors. Read more…

13 gifts for the person about to live on their own for the first time

TwitterFacebook

Graduation season is in full swing, and young people who just graduated from high school or college have been sent into a panic over leaving the nest and #adulting.

It can be a pretty intimidating milestone, and they’re gonna need all the help they can get.

They may not be thinking past Bluetooth speakers or decor — but as someone who’s been there before, you probably have a mental list of items you wish you had during your first year on your own. This valedictorian’s Catholic school banned his graduation speech. He delivered it outside with a bullhorn instead.

Most high school valedictorians deliver their graduation speeches in overcrowded gymnasiums to slightly sleepy crowds, but for one Kentucky senior things played out very differently.

Christian Bales, the valedictorian at Holy Cross High School in Covington, Kentucky, was recently banned from delivering his speech at the graduation ceremony. So he instead chose to deliver it from outside the building with a bullhorn — with his entire class watching on.

Members of Bales’ local Catholic diocese ruled that Bales’ speech was too political and inconsistent with church teachings. But Bales, who is openly gay, was undaunted and forged ahead with the speech, which touched on the power of young people being activists. He applauded his fellow students — all across the political spectrum — for participating in a recent March for Life and for advocating for gun control.  Read more…

One of the best things about sitting through long graduation ceremonies is spotting the cool graduation cap designs. While plenty opt-out of decorating (or use one of the many overdone phrases), many are inspired to be creative and unique when decorating.

Check out some of the coolest, funniest, and most unique designs of 2018. Movie, television, and video game references were hot, but these grads made the designs their own.

Finally painted my graduation cap! What could be more perfect than combining my favorite animated movie with my favorite art student meme? #Classof2018 #irongiant #ART #Otiscollegeofartanddesign pic.twitter.com/A1SLBOQ8R4
