Recording Academy president tells women to ‘step up’ in music industry hmmm

TwitterFacebook

Keen-eyed viewers may have noticed that only one woman won a major Grammy Award on Sunday, but don’t blame systemic sexism or centuries of gender bias! Recording Academy president Neil Portnow told Variety that women need “step up” in all aspects of the music industry because “I think they would be welcome.”

Oh, OK!

“I don’t have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that you face but I think it’s upon us — us as an industry — to make the welcome mat very obvious, breeding opportunities for all people who want to be creative and paying it forward and creating that next generation of artists,” said Portnow, a man. This woman’s stunned reaction to seeing Beyoncé has become a glorious meme

TwitterFacebook

Be honest: even if you don’t happen to be a big Beyoncé fan, you’d still be pretty starstruck if you happened to spot her in your hotel corridor.

On Sunday, Queen Bey rocked up to the Grammys with Jay-Z.

As you can see, she killed it:

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Jan 28, 2018 at 3:10pm PST

It’s easy to be distracted by just how stylish the two of them looked, but if you skim through to the fourth photo in that Instagram album there’s a hidden surprise.

Namely, this stunned bystander:

Celebrities were actually given ‘consolation puppies’ at the Grammys

TwitterFacebook

Okay, so instead of a prestigious award they got a puppy.

At the Grammys on Sunday, host James Corden didn’t just dish out those little golden gramophones. “Consolation puppies” were handed out to nominees who didn’t win their category.

Jerry Seinfeld (who was nominated for Best Comedy Album) was given a puppy called Roxy and Corden described her as “a biter”.

Many were happy to see the pups at the event.

One of consolation puppies just got walked past me so the night is pretty much downhill from here#GRAMMYs

Lorde’s Grammy dress had a powerful detail you probably missed

TwitterFacebook

While the wearing of white roses was the way for artists to show solidarity with the #TimesUp movement at the Grammys, Lorde opted for words instead.

The New Zealand singer stitched an excerpt of artist Jenny Holzer’s Inflammable Essays on the back of her dress instead of a white rose, which she posted on Instagram.

“My version of a white rose — THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM — an excerpt from the greatest of all time, jenny holzer,” Lorde’s caption read.

In many ways, you could think of this year’s Grammy Awards as a huge market correction.

A new nonprofit aims to put music back into schools

TwitterFacebook

When a child picks up an instrument — whether it’s a guitar, trombone, flute, or cello — they’re receiving a unique brand of education that cannot be taught from a textbook.

However, there more than 3.8 million pre-K through grade 12 students in the United States who have zero access to music education. Whether this stems from a lack of funding or a lack of interest, students across America are missing out on the type of valuable lessons that can be taught only through music education.

A new nonprofit called The GRAMMY Music Education Coalition aims to dramatically lessen this number by covering the expensive costs of musical instruments, recording equipment, and professional development courses for teachers in Philadelphia, New York City, and Nashville.    Read more…
