A one-inch Hawaiian snail is dead, and his species is likely gone forever.
The New Year’s Day death of the small, 14-year-old snail, named George by Hawaiian scientists, is yet another blow to the native Hawaiian ecosystem, which as the most isolated group of islands on the planet contains species found nowhere else.
But overexploitation, invasive predators, and climate change are continuously knocking out the critters here. And it’s happening fast.
“We’re witnessing complete extirpations at a rate that’s pretty remarkable,” David Sischo, the snail extinction prevention program coordinator at the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, said in an interview. Read more…

A monk seal in Hawaii was photographed with an eel stuck up its nose — and you’re going to be obsessed with it.
The photo of the adorable and mildly uncomfortable-looking seal with an eel dangling from its nostril was shared by the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program, which works with the NOAA Fisheries to conserve and protect the Hawaiian Monk seal population, according to Newsweek.
Apparently, eels getting stuck in seals noses happens occasionally, but no one is certain as to why. Read more…

The town of Volcano is swaying, back and forth.
“It’s been rocking and rolling,” Bobby Camara, a Volcano resident who spent decades working as a ranger at the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, said from his Big Island home.
Though the tremors are mild, they still cause the lamps in Camara’s house to gently swing.
“You feel like you’re drunk or on a boat — the quakes are quite subtle,” Camara said.
For over three months, the southeastern portion of Hawaii has been quaking and gushing lava, though the vigorously erupting lava recently took a pause. Read more…

Hawaii’s youngest volcano, Kilauea, continues to erupt and flow into the sea — which means lava bombs.
An airborne blob of volcanic lava hit a tour boat off the eastern edge of Hawaii’s Big Island on Monday morning, injuring 23 people.
According to the Hawaii County Fire Department, reported by Reuters, the lava bomb landed on the roof of the boat, punctured it and fell into the seating area.
Like a typical lava bomb, the chunk of molten rock was propelled into the air as hot lava from Kilauea poured into the Pacific Ocean. Read more…

Earlier this year, the people of Hawaii received an emergency alert on their phone. This alert read:
As you can probably now tell, a missile did not hit Hawaii in January 2018This message, which explicitly said was “not a drill,” indeed turned out to be just that: a drill. The test message was mistakenly sent out as an actual emergency alert. However, at the time, it took nearly 40 minutes for officials to issue a correction about the alert, sending pretty much everyone on the island in a confused state of panic.
In response to the false alarm in Hawaii, which occurred when a state emergency employee hit the wrong option on a drop-down menu, the FCC is taking steps to make the Emergency Alert System more reliable. Read more…
