Australia swelters in extreme weather as one town breaks heat record

Australians will be cranking up the pedestal fans, as extreme heatwave conditions sear across most of the country.

Temperatures have soared above average across much of the continent, peaking at 49.1°C (120.38°F) in the town of Marble Bar in Western Australia, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

The usual verdant grasses surrounding Buckingham Palace and much of the British Open’s 176-year-old Carnoustie golf course have yellowed since May. 

A lack of rain combined with near-record heat through the first half of the summer created this situation, and satellites images from the United Kingdom’s Met Office illustrate the expansive reach of the isles’ browning grasses. 

Like the UK, much of the world — even the polar regions — have been hit with extreme heatwaves or hot spells in the last couple weeks or longerSiberia reached 90 degrees earlier this month (40 degrees above normal), Scandinavia is burning, and California’s parched land has been turned to tinder. A man got his leg stuck in molten tarmac because the UK is basically melting

It’s literally so hot in the UK right now that things are actually melting. 

And, one poor chap experienced everyone’s worst nightmare when his leg disappeared into some tarmac that had melted because of the heat. 

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service in the north east of England tweeted photos taken of the young man stuck in the tarmac. 

“Young man stepped on some tarmac and lost his footing,” read the tweet. “The tarmac had become so soft during the current heatwave that it melted.”
