New York Governor ‘Amazon Cuomo’ is furious over canceled HQ2

TwitterFacebook

There is likely no one more distraught over Amazon’s decision to cancel its plans to build a second headquarters in Long Island City, Queens than New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Amazon chose to come to New York because we are the capital of the world and the best place to do business,” said Governor Cuomo in a statement after Amazon’s announcement on Thursday. “However, a small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community.”

Governor Cuomo was instrumental in bringing Amazon’s HQ2 to the city. The governor helped secure a deal with Amazon, which saw the company receiving a total of $3 billion tax incentives.  Read more…

Boston and NY share high tech losses as Amazon and GE bail on same day

Boston and New York have been sporting rivals for decades, constantly fighting over bragging rights across all four major sports, but today the two cities had something in common neither was probably hoping for. Both had major tech companies back out of massive deals on the same day. It turns out, however, the two cities […]

New York Mayor blames Amazon: ’You have to be tough to make it here’

TwitterFacebook

Amazon shocked everyone on Thursday when it announced it was halting plans to build a second headquarters in New York City’s Long Island City neighborhood.

While local opposition celebrated the unexpected announcement, one supporter of the project  —  Mayor Bill de Blasio — was less than thrilled.

You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity.

— Mayor Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) February 14, 2019

In a statement, Mayor de Blasio shared his disappointment in Amazon for its change of plans, in which the company essentially backed out of a $3 billion dollar tax incentive deal made with New York. The mayor puts the blame squarely on the e-commerce giant for failing to address locals’ concerns and taking the easy way out by dropping the move altogether. Read more…

The joke’s on us: Amazon still made out like a bandit

TwitterFacebook

Even when Amazon loses, it still wins.

The corporate behemoth announced Feb. 14 that it had abandoned its plan to open offices in Long Island City, Queens. In the face of local opposition to the proposed massive development and approximately $3 billion in government incentives, the company issued a statement bemoaning its newly found status as the unpopular kid in town — telling the world that it would take its ball and go home.

But here’s the thing: Even without New York bending over backward to accommodate its every helipad-laden whim, the company still made out like a bandit following the so-called HQ2 search. Because when it comes to Amazon, it’s all about that data — which in this case happens to be something government officials handed over in droves.  Read more…

Amazon will, however, proceed with its HQ2 plans in Arlington, Virginia as well as a third location in Nashville, Tennessee. The AP reports Amazon will not be searching for a location to replace the New York City site.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says bringing Amazon HQ2 to New York City is “mission critical”

During a state legislature hearing today, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said it is “mission critical” that Amazon build HQ2 in Long Island City. Amazon reportedly rethinking HQ2 in New York City

Amazon’s second headquarters may not be coming to New York City after all.

According to the Washington Post, Amazon may be reconsidering its decision to open its long-touted HQ2 to the borough of Queens in New York City. Sources “familiar with the company’s thinking” told the Post that the reassessment comes following local opposition from politicians and activist groups.

Last November, Amazon announced it had chosen New York’s Long Island City and Arlington, Virginia as its locations for a second company headquarters. The Seattle-based company also announced a third location in Nashville. The selections came after a year-long competition with hundreds of cities vying for Amazon’s favor. Read more…

Amazon may be rethinking its New York City headquarters

Amazon’s decision to open HQ2 in New York City has been a controversial decision since day one. The company has been championing the estimated 25,000 jobs the move could bring to the metropolitan area, while citizens and local government officials have balked at promised tax breaks and the added strain on housing and an aging infrastructure.
