Idaho school hit with backlash over offensive Trump-inspired costumes

TwitterFacebook

Proving that even Halloween isn’t immune from the political division our country is currently embroiled in, an Idaho school district has issued an apology after it faced stiff backlash to pictures of staffers in pro-Trump, anti-Immigrant costumes for the holiday.

In one photo, several staffers are lined up forming a brick wall with Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” phrase displayed, a reference to Trump’s long-promised border wall. Another photo featured several staffers dressed in sombreros, ponchos, and fake exaggerated mustaches, a racist stereotype of Mexicans.

Singer K’naan needs you to vote on his behalf in the U.S. midterm elections

TwitterFacebook

You likely know K’naan Warsame for his FIFA World Cup anthem “Waving Flag” and his role on The Hamilton Mixtape track, “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done.)” Now, he’s asking American citizens to vote on his behalf in the upcoming elections.

Though the Canadian-Somali singer and poet lives and works in New York, he’s a Canadian citizen and his family still resides in Toronto, which means he’s facing challenges as a result of the Trump administration’s travel ban.

So he released a powerful video plea in partnership with The Love Vote, a nonprofit organization that aims to give the 50 million people like K’naan — who are unable to vote in the U.S. due to circumstances like age, citizenship status, or disenfranchisement — a space for their voices to be heard. Study ties Facebook engagement to attacks on refugees

A study of circumstances and demographics attendant on attacks against refugees and immigrants in Germany has shown that Facebook use appears to be deeply linked with the frequency of violent acts. Far from being mere trolling or isolated expressions of controversial political opinions, spikes in anti-refugee posts were predictive of violent crimes against those groups.

A handy guide to the immigrant rights activists and experts you should follow on Twitter

It’s now been over three months since the Trump administration decided to prosecute every migrant entering the U.S. without permission. That policy, known as “zero tolerance,” led to the separation of children from their parents, as well as the indefinite detention of migrants awaiting a court hearing for asylum claims.

Children and parents still haven’t been reunited, and new protests and legal battles unfold every day as advocates try to hold the administration accountable for its immigration policies.

Families separated at the border can’t afford to be reunited. Here’s how you can help.

TwitterFacebook

The coalition that organized last month’s Families Belong Together march just launched a new fundraiser called Flights for Families. The program will help pay for the travel expenses of detained migrant parents asked by the government to cover the costs of reuniting with their children.

In the hours after the fundraiser launched Friday morning, the group raised $3,500 from over 50 individual donors. The goal is to raise $25,000.

The Families Belong Together coalition says the Trump administration is forcing families to travel long distances at their own cost. The expenses can exceed $3,000. Additionally, detained parents who want to reunite with their children are being told to pay for the cost of DNA testing.  Read more…
