Siri gets new airline, food order and dictionary Shortcuts, with more on the way

New iPad models, including iPad Mini, and new iPod Touch reportedly on the way

TwitterFacebook

A slew of new Apple products are on the way, if the latest iOS beta is to be believed.

Four new versions of the iPad are referenced in the iOS 12.2 beta, according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who made the discovery. The iPads are designated as iPad 11,1 to iPad 11,4 and include two WiFi and two cellular versions.

In theory, iOS 12.2 references four new iPads in WiFi & Cellular variants (perhaps mini, and 9.7″?), all without Face ID, and a (seventh-gen?) iPod touch with no Touch ID nor Face ID pic.twitter.com/xiJN6kmmTe

Troughton-Smith says that the iPad models mentioned in the iOS beta do not match currently released devices. He also explains that the iPads referenced do not have Face ID, leading him to speculate that these may very well be new iPad Minis. Read more…

iOS 12.1.2 update reportedly causing widespread cellular data outages

TwitterFacebook

There’s trouble in iOS paradise.

Apple’s 12.1.2 iOS update, rolled out Tuesday, appears to be causing more problems than the fix was intended to solve.

Multiple users on Twitter are complaining that the iOS update is bricking their phones by cutting off cellular data. First reported by Forbes, there are now multiple user complaints on Twitter about their iPhones’ inability to connect to cellular data after updating to the latest version of iOS.

Thanks @Apple @AppleSupport for the Christmas present…since updating my iPhone to iOS 12.1.2 I can’t access cellular data. I reset my device and now I can’t activate it anymore. No Service. Your better fix this in an update soon! 😡

Report: Apple’s iOS 12 now blocks iPhone-hacking tool favored by police

TwitterFacebook

Your iPhone just got a little more secure — assuming you’ve updated to iOS 12, that is.

Following reports earlier this summer that Apple planned to release a software update that would combat the phone-hacking device, sometimes used by police, known as GrayKey, Forbes has confirmed that the Cupertino-based company has done just that. While it’s not a 100 perfect lockout to the cops, the update goes a long way toward further protecting iPhone owners from invasive government snooping.

But first, some background. The GrayKey device, a physical machine manufactured by the Atlanta-based Grayshift, was able to get around iPhone PINs to unlock phones seized by police. Somehow, the device could bypass Apple’s prohibition of multiple password guesses. This allowed the GrayKey to enter codes in rapid succession until the phone unlocked. Read more…

Plagued by iOS 12 bugs? A new update is here to fix them.

TwitterFacebook

Help is on the way.

Apple issued a critical update to iOS 12 today that fixes several bugs plaguing iPhone XS and XS Max devices since their initial release.

The new version — iOS 12.0.1 — is available for download right now, and if you don’t receive a push notification prompting you to download it, you can force your device to by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.

The new version of iOS should fix several issues people have been reporting including that, at least in some instances, a device didn’t start charging when it was connected to a Lightning cable. The update will also fix a small WiFi issue that forced some iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max devices to connect to a slower 2.4 GHz band when a faster 5 GHz connection was available. Read more…
