The hype surrounding the hotly-anticipated iOS 12 has simmered down a bit, but only because it’s finally been released and people are too busy tinkering with their iPhones to tweet. (We’re guessing.)

Unlike the previous iOS updates, tech critics and casual users are touting iOS 12 as the fastest yet, and get this — even on older phones. Yup, after what seemed like an eternity, it looks to be that the iPhone slowdown fiasco is finally over.

Apple’s coolest keyboard trick became even better in iOS 12

TwitterFacebook

What if I told you that ultra-precise text editing and selection is not only possible, but easy, on all Apple gadgets running iOS 12?

If you, like me, have been struggling to edit that typo in a slab of text you just wrote on your iPhone on iPad, you may have missed a feature that lets you turn your keyboard into a trackpad and move the cursor around your text with perfect precision.

This feature has so far only been available for 3D Touch devices (i.e. newer iPhones) and on iPads (but with a different, clumsier implementation), but iOS 12 changed all that. Read on.

10 hidden features in iOS 12

TwitterFacebook

With any software upgrade, there’s a lot to unpack.

Apple’s iOS 12 is no different. You probably noticed Screen Time, Grouped Notifications, and fun photo effects right after the update. However, it’s the small changes that can make all the difference.

We’ve been digging through iOS 12 and found 10 hidden features that will level-up your iPhone experience.

1. Face ID alternate appearance

Apple’s TrueDepth sensor is the secret to how Face ID lets you unlock your iPhone with a glance. However, if you wear sunglasses often, sometimes put on heavy makeup, or switch wigs regularly — all of which are pretty common in professions like acting — facial recognition can fail a good chunk of the time. How will the Measure app affect dick pics? An investigation.

TwitterFacebook

What, did you not think people were going to use the iPhone’s new Measure app to measure their dicks?

The new feature, which debuted with iOS 12 on Monday, allows users to measure items on-screen in real time. This means that it’s easier than ever to determine the exact length of your pet, but it also means there could be a few changes to how people sext in the future.

Dick pic senders can now include an exact measurement (literally, it’s a ruler superimposed into the image) with their photos. If they’re proud of their penis size (masculinity is a real trip), it’s likely they’ll go the Measure app route — it’s a concrete way to convey size without using other items for scale. Read more…

iOS 12 saved my old iPad mini from the trash heap

TwitterFacebook

Until yesterday, I was thinking of turning my old iPad mini 2 into a digital photo frame. The tablet worked, but it was painfully slow. Launching an app always had an unacceptable lag, and any serious multitasking was near-impossible.

Then I updated it from iOS 11 to iOS 12, and suddenly the little guy was nearly as good as new.

I did not expect this, despite Apple’s claims that iOS 12 increases performance on its devices. The company says the same thing for every major release, but the differences have historically been negligible. In some cases, the iPad got slower after updating — but not this time. Read more…
