Apple is offering interest-free financing to boost iPhone sales in China

Apple is looking to get over its sales woes in China but offering prospective customers interest-free financing with a little help from Alibaba. Apple’s China website now offers financing packages for iPhones that include zero percent interest packages provided in association with several banks and Huabei, a consumer credit company operated by Alibaba’s Ant Financial […]

The best Pixel 3 updates are coming to Pixel 2. When will we see the real next big thing?

TwitterFacebook

A year after Google convinced me to ditch my iPhone 6S for a Pixel 2, it had the chance to win me over again with the Pixel 3. It didn’t close the deal.

The Pixel 2 is so good, and the upgrades the Pixel 3 provides that I most want are coming soon to Pixel 2 — everything else seems incremental. After watching Google’s Tuesday event, I know there’s no need for me to get a new phone.

My next phone’s features have to make a meaningful difference, and once I’m ready for the jump, I’m not swayed by brand loyalty. And the Pixel 3 simply didn’t cut it.

I may be an outlier when it comes to comfortably hopping from brand to brand or operating system to operating system, but I’m one of the pack when it comes to keeping my phone for longer.  Read more…

Thanks, Apple, for making it easy to cling to my iPhone 6S

TwitterFacebook

It’s launch day for the iPhone XS and XS Max. And if it seems a little muted compared to iPhone launch days past, that may be because Apple is making it increasingly easy to hang on to your three-year-old phone instead — even if they no longer sell that phone.

As I wrote last week, I was in the market for an XS. But I was torn: I’m one of those people who believes the iPhone 6S is the last truly great iPhone Apple made. I’m loath to swap my built-in headphone jack for a life in which I have to carry around a Lightning-to-aux dongle just in case.

And yes, fanboys, before you jump in: I already use Bluetooth headphones! I just like the option to plug in a wired set of cans — the same option I am afforded on my latest-model iPad Pro and bang-up-to-date MacBook. Answer me this, jackless iPhone owners: When you jump into a friend’s car for a long ride, want to play some tunes, and all they have is an aux cord, what do you do? Hope you remembered your dongle and don’t need to charge your phone at the same time!  Read more…

Apple says goodbye to the iPhone 6S, but I refuse to

TwitterFacebook

Every year when Apple holds its big iPhone event, there’s always one older-generation model that’s removed from Apple Stores.

This year is no exception. Apple has finally put the iPhone 6S out to pasture. Bye-bye, iPhone 6S!

But while Apple may not be selling it’s 3-year-old iPhone anymore, the existing iPhone 6S devices out in the wild still have a lot of life left in them. So really, the 6S isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

A recent study by analytics company Mixpanel confirmed this notion by suggesting that the iPhone 6S is currently the second most in-use iPhone model in the world. Second only to the iPhone 7, the iPhone 6S is more popular than the iPhone 8 and iPhone X with 13.01 percent of the iPhone market share, according to the study. Read more…

I wanted a new iPhone. Apple confused the hell out of me.

TwitterFacebook

I still love my iPhone 6s. The device, hailed by some as the last great iPhone (and the last one with a headphone jack), has served me well for the last three years. It runs faster on iOS 12 — the beta version, at least — than it did on iOS 11.

But at some point soon, I’m going to have to let this old workhorse go. The main issue is the battery: even with a fresh one installed, today’s energy-hungry apps and services can grind it down. Seems like half the time I carry it around, it’s hooked up to an external battery, like a miniature iron lung. I admit to being jealous of iPhone X owners who can breeze through a whole day on a single charge — and don’t always need to remember to take a battery pack with them when they leave the house.
