This gold iPhone XS Max-Apple Watch combo is the dumbest way to spend $21,050

TwitterFacebook

It’s an iPhone. It’s an Apple Watch. It’s, um, both. And it costs $21,050.

Yes, Caviar, the Russian company that gave us the golden Vladimir Putin iPhone, just dropped the Swiss Dreams Watchphone.

In case you’re wondering, that’s an iPhone XS Max covered in gold and decorated with a world map for some reason. Attached is an Apple Watch Series 4, with the added convenience of not being wearable.

Imagine the kind of person who would buy this monstrosity. Can’t do it? That’s because no reasonable human being on Earth would purchase this thing for $1,000, let alone more than $20,000. An oligarch raised in a Gucci-lined platinum Bugatti would probably think it was a bit much. Read more…

Apple is increasing the trade-in value for those getting an XS, XS Max, or XR

TwitterFacebook

Amid reports of Apple scaling back iPhone production, the tech behemoth has a new trade-in promotion.

This limited time deal will give select iPhone trade-ins up to $100 more when put towards a 2018 iPhone. It clearly seems like a push to drive more sales of these devices.

Customers can take advantage of this deal both online and in retail stores through the Apple Giveback program. In fact, you can even get the value of the trade-in instantly online or in person — making it easy to get a new phone on the spot.

iPhones eligible for this bonus include the 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, and 8. The older devices are getting more significant trade-in credits with an iPhone 6 moving to $150 from $75 and the 6 Plus from $100 to $200. These are the maximum values and will depend on the condition of the device.  Read more…

Uh oh, Apple has reportedly cut production on all new iPhones

TwitterFacebook

As the holidays approach, Apple’s suppliers are not happy.

The company slashed production of all three of its new iPhone models — the XR, XS, and XS Max — according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The XR has reportedly taken the biggest hit: Apple reduced production orders for the XR twice over the past two months.

This has reportedly caused frustration and an understandable amount of stress along Apple’s China-based supply chain. Foxconn has cut the customary pre-holiday season overtime hours, leaving workers without an expected pay boost. Three of Apple’s largest suppliers reduced quarterly profit estimates, which they attributed to a “large client” cutting orders. Read more…

Apple admits people weren’t hallucinating ‘Beautygate’

TwitterFacebook

Beauty is in the eye of the iPhone beholder.

Apple is fixing a bug in its smart front camera system that made for unnaturally filtered-looking selfies. Apple confirmed to The Verge that the phenomenon some iPhone users dubbed “Beautygate” was indeed a thing, and not the imagination of paranoid selfie-takers.

— iDrop News (@iDropNews) September 28, 2018

Beautygate was not the work of a filter. Apparently, the dynamic camera system was using a less detailed base frame for its composite images. That loss of detail is what gave the appearance of a smoothing filter. Read more…

There’s a bug stopping some iPhone XS and XS Max phones from charging

TwitterFacebook

Some iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners are having trouble charging their devices.

Owners across the web are complaining that some of Apple’s latest iPhones are not charging properly when plugged in, MacRumors pointed out Saturday. The problem seems to occur when users plug in their phones while they are in sleep mode and the screens are off.

YouTuber Unbox Therapy was alerted to this problem and performed a test where he plugged in a bunch of iPhone XS and XS Max devices to test whether they charge while asleep, and found that several XS and XS Max phones didn’t start charging until after he woke up the phone. Not only that, one iPhone XS Max was stuck in sleep mode while plugged in and he couldn’t take the phone out of its frozen state until he unplugged it. Read more…

See the new iPhone’s ‘focus pixels’ up close

The new iPhones have excellent cameras, to be sure. But it’s always good to verify Apple’s breathless on-stage claims with first-hand reports. We have our own review of the phones and their photography systems, but teardowns provide the invaluable service of letting you see the biggest changes with your own eyes — augmented, of course, by a high-powered microscope.

Teardown of iPhone XS reveals new, L-shaped battery

TwitterFacebook

Now that Apple’s iPhone XS and XS Max are available for purchase, they’ve already been dropped, drowned, and of course — torn down.

The teardown experts at iFixit have disassembled the iPhone XS and its bigger sibling, the iPhone XS Max, in one go. And though the phones’ internals are similar to the guts of last year’s iPhone X, the teardown does reveal a few interesting new details.

Remember that odd, L-shaped, two-part battery from the iPhone X? In the iPhone XS, it’s still L-shaped, but it’s now a single, unbroken part. This didn’t help capacity much, as the iPhone XS’ battery capacity lags behind the iPhone X by a few milliamp-hours (mAh), and the teardown reveals why: The single-part battery has a notch of sorts, which — according to this 2016 Apple patent — serves as a “relief zone” that reduces stress on the battery. In any case, it’s much cooler-looking and will hopefully enable Apple to do even more complex, space-saving battery designs in the future.  Read more…
