SpaceX makes history by completing first private crew capsule mission

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule has safely splashed down in the Atlantic, making it the first privately built crew-capable spacecraft ever to complete a mission to the International Space Station. It’s one of several firsts SpaceX plans this year, but Boeing is hot on its heels with a crew demonstrator of its own — and of course the real test is doing the same thing with astronauts aboard.

The International Space Station’s new robot is a freaky floating space Alexa

Meet Cimon. The 3D printed floating robot head was developed by Airbus for the German Space Agency. He’s been a crew member of the International Space Station since June, though as Gizmodo notes, this is the first time we’re seeing him in action. Really the floating, Watson-powered robot face is like an extremely expensive Amazon […]

11 moments from the International Space Station’s first 20 years

It was November 20, 1998, when an unprecedented international coalition of astronomers, engineers, and rocket scientists saw years of collaboration come to fruition with the launch of the International Space Station’s first component. Since then the largest spacecraft ever built has hosted innumerable astronauts, experiments, and other craft. Here are a few notable moments in the history of this inspiring and decades-spanning mission.

Soyuz bounces back after failure: Crewed mission to Space Station launches early next month

The high profile but fortunately non-lethal failure of a crewed mission atop a Soyuz rocket in October has been investigated thoroughly enough that American, European, and Russian space agencies are willing to ride aboard the venerable launch system. Roscosmos announced that a crewed mission will fly to the International Space Station on December 3, less than two months after the anomaly.

Astronaut captures photos of ominous-looking Hurricane Florence from space

TwitterFacebook

On Wednesday, Hurricane Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 season in the Atlantic Ocean.

On Thursday, astronauts saw the ominous storm swirling from space.

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold captured images of Florence as it strengthened on Thursday from his post on the International Space Station.

“#HurricaneFlorence strengthens in the early morning hours over the Atlantic,” Arnold said on Twitter.

In the photos, Florence seems massive, albeit somewhat disorganized since the hurricane’s eye isn’t immediately noticeable and the storm has lost some of it’s symmetry.  Read more…

A robotic astronaut named CIMON is on its way to the ISS

There’s a new astronaut on its way to the International Space Station this morning aboard SpaceX’s most recent resupply launch, and it’s only the size of a medicine ball. CIMON (Crew Interactive Mobile Companion) is an artificial intelligence assistant designed by Airbus and IBM to assist the European Space Agency’s astronauts in everyday tasks aboard […]

SpaceX launch will bring science and supplies to ISS and return with a glitchy Robonaut

SpaceX is about to launch its 14th resupply mission to the International Space Station, sending up a lightly used Dragon capsule filled with goodies at 1:30 PST. In addition to the delivery, this Dragon will also take back some cargo: the malfunctioning Robonaut 2, which apparently bricked itself sometime during the last few months.

The International Space Station is getting a new printer

This story has it all: space, printers. HP’s Envy ISS, a printer designed for the extremely narrow use case of zero gravity, is hitching a ride on today’s Space-X CSR 14 rocket launch. The printer, which is based on the company’s regular-gravity OfficeJet 5740 is (as its name implies) destined for the International Space Station, which […]

Bigleow aims to launch its own expandable space station as NASA plans pullback from ISS

TwitterFacebook

Bigelow Aerospace — which currently has an inflatable capsule attached to the International Space Station (ISS) — announced bold plans to populate low-Earth orbit with inflatable space capsules. The announcement on Tuesday comes soon after the Trump administration proposed a NASA budget that would cease funding the Space Station after the year 2024.

The company’s CEO, Robert Bigelow — who is convinced aliens have visited Earth — announced the creation of a new company called Bigelow Space Operations, which will sell and manage the company’s inflatable capsules.

Last week, NASA announced it will allow private companies to play a leading role in maintaining the massive, aging Space Station after 2024. Bigelow could potentially play a role in the upkeep and management of the station, or provide expandable platforms for a new station.  Read more…
