Here’s the electric Jaguar that Waymo wants to turn into a self-driving car

Waymo’s self-driving car service is supposed to kick off by the end of this year, but before the robot cars start taking riders around, you can experience or even own some of the cars Waymo’s using in its growing autonomous fleet.

Back in March, Waymo announced that 20,000 of Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace crossovers would be used for its self-driving taxi service. Now the British car maker’s first electric vehicle is here — deliveries in the U.S. start next month.

The car was on display and available for rides Wednesday just south of San Francisco for the first leg of the Jaguar Electrifies experience. After this week the car goes on to Miami, Los Angeles, and finally New York. Read more…

Jaguar races through frigid Arctic in its forthcoming electric SUV

Jaguar brought a fleet of its electric vehicle prototypes to the Arctic in northern Sweden, and then proceeded to race them around the snow-blanketed flats.

This could be viewed as stunt — though a potentially useful stunt: It’s important to see how electric vehicles perform in extreme weather conditions. According to Jaguar, the company drove its forthcoming I-PACE SUV around its test facility at temperatures as low as -40 Celsius (which is also -40 Fahrenheit).

Cold temperatures can affect battery performance, which Tesla noted in a late 2017 software update allowing drivers to “preheat” their battery in cold environments. Tesla recommended this “preconditioning” to limit the loss of range and general performance. Read more…

Jaguar puts Tesla’s Model X on notice with a long-range test drive in California

TwitterFacebook

Jaguar’s I-PACE concept won’t be available for drivers until the second half of next year — but the all-electric luxury SUV is already showing off its impressive range on the streets of California.

The British automaker just released some new footage of one of its prototype vehicles taking a trip up the west coast of California, displaying an impressive range for an all-electric SUV that hasn’t yet reached its final form. The I-PACE shuttled a potential customer on the roughly 200-mile jaunt from LA to San Luis Obispo, and the Jaguar engineer behind the wheel claimed the EV had plenty of juice to spare at the trip’s end.  Read more…
